Hey everyone.

I wanted to highlight a feature released a while back but rarely used. Embedded media.

Embedded media converts a supported link into a player directly on the site. Some of you may have seen it when people share youtube videos on Reddit, where it allows you to play the video while staying on Reddit instead of going to YouTube and watching it.

To test this out, we wanted a thread where you can all share links to test the feature and find its limitations. Underneath here, you can see how you add an embedded link:

Note: When embedding media, use the direct browser URL (e.g., https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oxv6IRcuNaI) and not the embedded URL (https://www.youtube.com/embed/Oxv6IRcuNaI - mind the /embed/)

There are a few caveats, of course. One is that cookies are essential for this feature to work. Another is some types of media might be region restricted. So if a youtube video, for example, does not play for you, that might be because it is restricted in your region only to be played directly from youtube, or not at all.

If the link you are trying to embed, as shown above, does not embed, there is the option to do it manually.

  1. First select the three dots (more)
  2. Then click on embedded media
  3. Then fill in the URL of the media you are trying to share and click Add

I look forward to seeing how you all utilize this feature, as I will be using this feature myself in a future post.

As said, you can use this thread to test the feature and find its limitations.

If you have any questions about it, or some things don’t work as they should, please post them in this thread.

a track on YouTube Music, rather than on YouTube

Edit: still get YouTube Video. Lesson learned 😁

I got “the provided domain is not supported”, it was a YouTube.com url.

Your example shows starting a new thread, but here obviously I was trying to reply to a thread. I tried “...” / Embed Media / pasted a url

This is from Firefox on PC.

Hi @controlav

I confess I did not follow the instructions and simply pasted the URL into the main text input box - does doing that work for you?

I just added the above link by following the instructions, and without issue. Can you please let me know the URL that failed, and I’ll try adding it myself? Thanks.

<deleted>

Clearly this feature does not work for me, this was a direct paste of the url.

Hi @controlav

I will try the same:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJ__zshIwcs

Edit: well, that’s strange!

Thanks for flagging - I’ll bring this up when they are all back from their NL holiday.

https://youtu.be/MJ__zshIwcs

Hmm - that didn’t work either (removed “/watch?v=”)

I also got the error:

And I got the same with the longer version of the URL too.

Hi @controlav

So, when posting the URL of the Linus Tech Tips video above, I immediately see a thumbnail of the video inserted in the text input box before I have even posted, but with your video I do not. As the domain is the same, I don’t know why this is not working for your video - I thought at first maybe the video wasn’t public, but that doesn’t explain why I can see it play (in a separate browser tab).

Hopefully, DH (Insided) will be able to see what’s going wrong. Thanks again for flagging.

Hmm this looks a bit like the error I got before the feature was enabled on the site.@controlav just to make sure, if you try to post one of the videos @Corry P shared does it embed the media for you, or does it still fail?
If it fails then try clearing cache and cookies, as I know Gainsight (Insided) mentioned that it was a cookie restriction that stopped it from working in the past. I will forward the youtube link you shared to them and have them test it out to see if we can find out why that one in particular does not post :)

Using Corry’s link works for me, ruling out some cookie-specific problem I think.

Good to know, that means we got one less thing they might ask us about :)

Just heard back from Gainsigh. @controlav the issue is with the settings of the video. It has been set to not allow playback on other platforms, that is why it fails.

I found a guide from Google on how to change the permissions, to allow the embedding to happen on other websites: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6301625?hl=en. That should hopefully fix the issue :)

Interesting! Lets try this

Well it embeds, but has trouble playing, I’ll try again later.

@controlav I can play that video
