We understand that your privacy is of utmost importance, and we are dedicated to protecting your personal information with the highest standards of security and transparency.

You may have noticed a recent change in our communications: the removal of the phrase "We do not and will not sell your personal data to third parties”. This adjustment was made in response to updated privacy laws in California and several other US states. These regulations require us to be more specific and precise about our data handling practices.

What Does This Mean for You?

Our commitment to safeguarding your privacy remains as strong as ever. While the wording has changed to meet legal requirements, our practices have not. We do not sell your personal data. Our primary goal is to ensure that your information is protected and used responsibly.

Why We Made This Change

The evolving landscape of privacy laws means we need to be clear and accurate about how we handle your data. By removing the broad statement and providing more detailed information (for more information, please review the California Residents Addendum to our Privacy Statement), we are ensuring that we meet all regulatory standards and continue to operate with full transparency.

Our Use of Modern Marketing Tools

To enhance your experience, we use several modern and industry-standard marketing tools, including third-party service providers and social media platforms. These tools help us identify and display relevant ads and marketing communications tailored to your interests. Any data that is shared in this process is hashed or otherwise pseudonymized, ensuring that your personal information remains protected and private. You can always opt out  of such data sharing. If you wish to opt out, please contact us at privacy@sonos.com.

Some of our practices may fall within the definition of "sale/share" under US state privacy laws. For example, if you didn’t opt-out and/or reach out to privacy@sonos.com regarding your data, we may share your hashed emails with social media companies for advertising purposes, including creating lookalike audiences. Additionally, we allow third-party cookies (and similar technology) on Sonos' website, but you can opt out of this via a link on our website (see more details below). We also use data to provide the ad-supported version of Sonos Radio to a certain extent.

Your Choice Matters

We believe in giving you control over your personal information. You are always free to make your choice and opt out of any of these practices. If you wish to adjust your privacy preferences or opt out of specific data-sharing practices, please see more details below or contact our customer service team for assistance.

  1. If/when you browse on sonos.com, you can opt out of cookie based sharing of data by navigating to the footer of sonos.com and clicking on the link titled “Your Privacy Choices” or “Cookie Settings” (depending on your location). From there, a pop-up window will appear. Within the pop-up window, scroll down to the section titled “Manage Consent Preferences” and from there, select your preferred data settings. You should follow this instruction for each of your various web browsers you utilize when visiting sonos.com.

  2. We use tools, including third party service providers and social media platforms, that help us identify and reach out to existing and new customers by matching a hashed (a pseudonymized technique) email address with data these third party service providers and/or social media platforms already have about individuals. This is done to create so-called “Custom Audiences” (this enables us to send targeted ads to our customers) and “Lookalike Audiences” (this enables us to send targeted ads to people who have similar profiles and/characteristics to our customers). You can opt out of such data sharing by logging in to your Sonos Account and navigating to “Contact preferences” or by clicking on the “Unsubscribe” link in the footer of every marketing email we send.

  3. Using the free tier of Sonos Radio relies upon data practices that may meet the definition of sale/share of data under various US state laws or may qualify as opting out of data processing based on a “legitimate business interest” in the EU. For example, IP address, zip code, Sonos device type, genre of the music station you are currently listening to, listener ID, and/or language may be shared with analytics providers, advertising partners, or unaffiliated third parties for advertising purposes. To opt-out of the data sharing associated with the free tier of Sonos Radio, simply do not use the free Sonos Radio service. For the sake of clarity, the use of Sonos Radio HD (which is a paid-for service, free of advertisements) does not rely on sale/share of customer data.

Keeping You Informed

In 2023, we sent an email to all our US customers outlining these changes. If you’re located in the US and did not receive this email, please check your spam folder or contact our customer service team for more information.

We are committed to continuously improving our privacy practices and staying ahead of regulatory changes. Your trust and confidence in us are what drive us to maintain the highest standards of privacy protection.

If you have any questions or concerns about these changes, please do not hesitate to reach out to our customer service team. We are here to help and ensure you feel comfortable with how your information is handled.

Thank you for being a valued member of the Sonos community. Your privacy is our priority, and we appreciate your ongoing trust in us.
