I have just purchased the beam, trying to connect it to our TV with the HDMI arc port, but for the last hour and a half the app has stayed on the connecting page. Any ideas on what's wrong?

Try this:

Disconnect everything from your TV including the Beam. Unplug the TV and Beam from power for a couple of minutes and reboot your router and phone. Plug the TV and Beam back in but keep everything disconnected. Make sure CEC is enabled in your TV settings. Run TV Setup under the Beam’s settings in the Sonos app and connect the Beam to the TV’s HDMI ARC port using the Sonos-supplied HDMI cable when the app instructs you to. After the Beam has been successfully connected, connect any other device to your TV.
