No TV Involved at all. No HDMI,
I have a Project CD player plugged into Sonos Amp. Thats all.
The following remote controls the CD player using IR.
When I go to train the AMP to use the volume control buttons it does not recognise the buttone presses (but it does recognise that it is an unrecognised remote to begin with
Does the SONOS amp not have the ability to register some IR codes?

So I worked out the solution thanks to Technical Support
When pairing a Pro-Ject CD remote with an AMP.
Instead of pressing the (+) button or the (-) button 3 times.
You need to hold the (+) or (-) button down continuously and wave your hand up and down 3 times to block the signal. Something to do with the way the project remote pulse I imagine.
Easiest way to do. Hold the button you want to pair down and wave your hand in front of the remote until it is confirmed then let go of the button.

Sorry to hear of this issue you have been having with trying to get your CD remote to work with your Amp.
No, I know of no instances where we simply will not accept certain IR codes.
First, please ensure that the Amp has been told to accept IR inputs: Settings icon » [room with Amp] » set Use IR to On (dot goes to the right).
Next, please use your phone’s camera to ensure that the remote is working - point the end (top) of the remote to the camera and ensure you see a light flash on the camera view screen when you press a remote button (the light is invisible to the naked eye, but should show in the camera). If you see no light, please replace the battery, or ensure that the remote is working by using it to control the CD player.
Try setting up the remote once more. If it still does not work, please try pressing each button 3 times when you see the screen above. Alternatively, please try pressing a button on the remote once before pointing it at Amp (so Amp only detects the second press).
If you still have trouble, I recommend you get in touch with our technical support team who have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your Sonos system and what it reports.

Yes I have tried the above and can confirm the remote is sending a signal.
I also tested setting up the AMP with a remote I had for my bedroom and it worked so its not the receiver either.

Glad you resolved your issue. I’m curious as to why you opted for the Port ($449) vs an Era 100 + Line-in adapter ($268). Maybe you already had the Port? As I said just curious. Thanks in advance for your response

The AMP is driving the speakers.
The connection is made from optical out of the CD player to the ARC input of the AMP with an optical adapter.
However I do agree that the best way to get an analog source into the eco system would be a speaker with a line input.
