I am strongly considering purchasing the new Sonos Play. I first need to know if this speaker can be used in combination with the Sonos Beam (Gen 2) that is currently being used for my TV. Or can the Move 2 do this?

Portables cannot be used as surrounds.

“In combination with”: yes. Set up the Play as a new room, and group them.

But if you mean “as surrounds”: no.

It’s amazing how much information Sonos provides on their web site. In the FAQ’s for Play, for example, it says:

Does Sonos Play support stereo pairing?

Yes, on WiFi. When connected to your home network, you can use the Sonos app to pair two Sonos Play speakers for wider, more detailed sound. Portable speakers cannot be used for surround sound in a Sonos home cinema setup.

Play and Move 2 are portable speakers, so cannot be configured as surrounds to your Beam.
