Hi all,

I have a NVIDIA Shield Pro → LG G5 → Sonos Arc Ultra (eARC).

I am trying movies coded with TrueHD Atmos 7.1 but on Sonos its showing Dolby Multichannel 2.0.

How do I get the TV and Shield to give me the correct/proper sound?
I thought the Arc Ultra handled Atmos right, so why wouldnt it output this?

Any help or best settings would be so welcome… Please help.

FYI, I also tried with an Apple TV 4k, so if anyone has ideas for this that would be great too.

Hi @SavellM

Welcome back to the Sonos Community!

I am sorry to hear of this issue you are having with playing Atmos content through your nVidia Shield, LG TV and Arc Ultra setup. It sounds like either the Shield or the TV is converting the audio to stereo for maximum compatibility.

I myself have a nVidia Shield and an Arc Ultra, so I should be able to assist you with this.

First please note that not all TrueHD content is Atmos - if you are playing using the Plex app, for example, there is no way to tell if the movie you have selected is Atmos just by seeing the TrueHD badge there. Atmos content is either TrueHD or EAC3 (Dolby Digital +), but those can be Atmos-less content too.

We also need to make sure the nVidia Shield is sending the right signals - I have the following settings: go to Settings » Display & Sound » Sound » Advanced Sound Settings where I have “Match Dolby/PCM audio levels” and “Play comfort noise on HDMI” enabled, with all the other options disabled. Under Select Formats, I have manual selection, and all formats enabled apart from DTS-HD. Please note that I have a Hisense TV and may be using different settings here. If your TV does not support DTS, for example, you may want to disable it here (though the TV’s passthrough option should still work, in theory).

Assuming you have selected Atmos content to play, you also need to make sure the TV’s settings are appropriate for sending Atmos to the Arc Ultra:

An AI told me the following about your TV’s settings:

How to Manage Audio Output:

  1. Access Settings: Press the Settings button on your remote (gear icon).
  2. Sound Output: Navigate to Sound > Sound Out.
  3. Choose Device: Select HDMI ARC/eARC
  4. Advanced Settings: In Sound, use Digital Sound Output settings for detailed format control (use Pass-Through or Auto).

I hope this helps.

What app on the Nvidia are you using to play content? Does this app also have sound settings?

Hi @SavellM

@106rallye makes a great point. On Plex, my audio setting is Passthrough. Please use a similar setting on your playback app.

Edit: If you are using a streaming app, like Netflix, ensure your subscription is of a high enough tier to get Atmos, and ensure Atmos is selected in the Spatial Sound option.

I’m using Jellyfin and the native JF client on Android and Apple TV…

I believe there is a passthrough setting and I’ll confirm its on too.

Will check this afternoon when I’m home.
