I’m sorry for writing this as I know this subject has been discussed before; however, it’s annoying, and there is no good reason to put up with it!  I only have the Sonos system about a month.  I bought the Beam and then added the subwoofer.  Why would I spend over $1000 for supposedly a first class system and have it turn on whenever it feels like it.  I have no speakers, only a television is connected to this system.  I do not have Spotify.  I have Amazon music which I haven’t even activated.  As a customer, it’s not my job to do anything except use the equipment as it was designed.  It’s not designed to wake me at all hours when it decides to turn on.  I turn the volume down on my television before turning it off.  The TV and the Beam are controlled by a Comcast remote.  I tried to de-program the remote but that didn’t help at all.  Next step is brain surgery.  Paying all that money will not stop me from throwing the damn thing out the window or giving it away.  IT IS NOT MY RESPONSIBLiITY TO CORRECT A SONOS TECHNICAL PROBLEM!.  I would like Sonos, or someone who fixed a similar problem (THERE ARE MANY WHO COMPLAINED) to give me a suggestion as to a solution.  The Sonos operating room is ready for surgery!

Can you describe exactly what the problem is? You didn’t make it very clear.


I wrote twice as to what the problem is.  In line 4, I asked why does one buy a system that I paid a fair amount of money for when it turns on by itself?  

 

A little later I asked why pay for this when it turns on itself . This question has been asked many, many times.  Why don’t we have an answer?

 

 


Your TV is turning it on, unplug the TV from the mains and it will stop.


 My soundbar is connected to a Sony TV via eARC.  It turns itself on occasionally.  I think it’s the TV or cable box (Xfinity).  Never been able to troubleshoot this.


Will try the TV disconnect tonight.

I had (emphasis on had) the same issue with a much older Sony using an HDMI ARC port and my Beam 2. I suggest you call Sonos Tech support to discuss the issue. BTW there a fix 😊.


My Sony Bravia turns my AVR + linked sub on.

Google TV, which runs my Sony, performs background tasks, such as TV guide downloading, update checks, downloads, firmware installs and reboots. Usually within 10-15 mins of being powered off I hear my AVR and Sub switch back on if it’s going to happen and the TV gets chatty with the internet for a few minutes then everything powers off again.

The main panel never lights up, it’s just when the main board powers up for its background tasks it powers up the usb and hdmi-eArc ports. I assume because I have hdmi-cec enabled that the Avr powers up, which then switches the sub on.

Doesn’t particularly bother me and I could probably reduce or stop it by disabling the background tasks in Google TV and disabling hdmi-cec.

Bravias have a more annoying separate issue, which powers the usb on and off regular when in standby, which caused my bias light plugged into usb to turn into a mini disco light, until setting the rs232 control mode to serial, at which point the usb port stays powered on.

Hi, and thanks for your suggestions.  First, I have re-read my original writeup.  There is not a word in there about me having a Sony TV.  I don’t have a Sony TV, it’s a Mitsubishi unit.  I also want to re-emphasize the fact that my remote does control the TV and subwoofer.  I took the batteries out and left outside of the room.  That was not sucessful either.  The one thing I I can say is the little white light that should stay on forever turns green when the unit decides to turn on.  Also, I have no control over the time it plays on its own.  I think I might have some bug that is different.  Since turning the volume down, it’s not as annoying as much because I’m not tuned in to a specific schedule.  The final thing I want to say is, if this continues I’m going to hire a dance teacher.  Might as will make something practical out of this problem. The only problem is I don’t hear it during the day and dance teachers are unreasonable in the middle of the night.

 You did not state what kind of TV you have.  I was just describing the situation I have with my Sony TV just in case that was the brand TV you have.  We do have one thing in common… Comcast.  Doubt that’s the culprit though.

 Green on the Sonos device is Mute.


You’ll notice that BEAM’s status light goes green when BEAM is muted. (Zero Volume) You mentioned that you turn the Volume down as part of your shutdown procedure. Make sure that the status light is green at that time. Is the status light still green during these audio events?

Do you have any other input devices connected to the TV?


I didn’t think the TV was part of the problem.  Apparently it is. My TV is a Mitsubishi.  I think it works just fine; however; I am going to experiment a bit with a few of the recommendations I received.  I have plans to donate part of my life tomorrow waiting for Sonos tech support.  I have had several suggestions as to how to fix this problem.  I will try some of them; however, I think the final solution is Sonos.  The complaint about having the Beam turn on or something turns it on in the middle of the night has been posted and brought up many times.  Sonos is responsible.  By now, there should be a fix.  Apparently there might be a fix as one of the folks who wrote me give me the name of a tech at Sonos who took him through some instructions. His Beam ceased to turn on itself.  Well, if I manage to live through the call with Sonos tech, I will be happy for a similar response.   Hopefully this will all settle down and I can send a note to all about how pleased I am to be able to sleep through the night.

The status light is white all of the time, except it turns green when it turns on itself.

No other devices are connected to the system.  No speakers. Nothing.


Green indicates that BEAM is muted. Listen carefully for the sound source. Is it BEAM or TV?

I had an issue with the Comcast cable box updates. In the middle of the night they would update the box and, as a courtesy, turn the box ON after the update. Of course the TV and soundbar would pick up on this and start playing. We made a point of setting the soundbar Volume to zero at the end of a viewing session.


 The source of the music is definitely not the TV.. It never goes on until I turn it on. Of the source of the sound you get is not the TV, is there someone else that may have access to your network and play Spotify inadvertently?

If your test fails, you could make a diagnostic and call Sonos about it -they should be able to see what started the sound.


I hope Sonos has an answer.  I will call tomorrow.
