TV = Samsung model UN65NU6900FXZA

Sonos system = Beam (Gen 2) w/ One & One (Gen2) surrounds

Connection: Connected w/ HDMI 2.1 cable via ARC HDMI output

Hey team - I’ve exhausted all of the threads in the community, so its time to start my own. I finally completed my surround setup recently and have been very frustrated to find the audio is behind the video. Because of this the audio delay settings on the TV and in the app only make the situation worse.

I’ve done quite a bit of troubleshooting with no luck:

  • Confirmed no audio delay configured in TV settings and in Sonos app
  • Unplug everything, restart devices, etc
  • Upgraded my ARC HDMI cable that connects the Beam to the TV from 2.0 to 2.1
  • Toggled between content from Apple TV (preferred) and the native Samsung TV apps
  • Toggled HDMI input audio format between PCM & Bitstream (no passthrough on my TV)
  • Toggled digital output audio format between PCM, Dolby Digital, and Dolby Digital+

The only configuration that doesn’t have any audio delay is when I set the HDMI input audio format to be PCM and the digital output audio format to be PCM. But this results in Stereo PCM sound and quite frankly it’s horrible. Not what I wanted out of a system that I’ve invested over $1000 in over the years.

Where do I go from here? Please let me know if you have any further questions. Help me save my ears from this blasphemy! Thank you in advance.

Have you called Sonos Support to discuss it? I wouldn’t depend on the chat bot here, I think you may need to speak to a human. Have you called Samsung to check with them about why the TV appears to be delaying the signal sent to the Sonos?

Just to be clear here, we are talking about a delay on the Beam (and surrounds, eventually), but how much?

Can you post the audio settings from your Samsung TV? For ease of reference for others, I think the manual is here

The movie industry had this sort of mess under control by the early 1940’s. The video industry still doesn’t care. You may be able to improve the situation by using the most premium video format available. This might slow the picture delivery somewhat,

Sometimes, careful system setup can help. Disconnect all HDMI cables and power down all of the units for at least two minutes. Next, power up the SONOS and TV, but don’t connect the HDMI until they fully boot. Anynet should be enabled on the TV. Next, connect the TV and SONOS HDMI cable and give them a couple minutes to share details. Finally, connect other HDMI devices to the TV. I’m not claiming that this will cure your issue, but it’s your best shot.

Get a new TV. It isn’t uncommon for older TVs to delay audio in the more advanced formats, your TV really needs pass through.

You could try optical instead of HDMI, using the adapter that came with the Beam.

You could also disable Game mode on the TV if you are using that, it will “slow down” the video a few frames which might help.

I would really hate to have to get a new TV… the TV is from 2018 and the beam and one came out prior to this date. It should just work. The delay is noticeable enough that it makes TV with lots of dialogue unbearable to watch.

I will do the following:

  • Confirm I’m not in game mode
  • Try another full restart of all equipment
  • Call Sonos support (and ask for a free optical cable if they don’t have any better ideas)

Any other ideas?

I’d still contact Samsung. They’re the ones delaying the sound output, making changes to Sonos won’t help until the TV can send data out at the appropriate speed. There just isn’t any way for any system, n much less Sonos, to play something before it is received.

It certainly may be worth double checking for firmware/software updates for this TV as well, but I have the feeling you’ve already done so.
