Seems the TV Autoplay function on my ARC soundbar is not working consistently as I would expect.  

When this feature is enabled, my assumption is any audio signal provided via HDMI to the Sonos ARC should take priority over streaming audio via the Sonos App (i.e., Spotify, etc.). This should in turn automatically switch the audio signal from streaming audio to HDMI when present.

Curious if I have the correct understanding of how this functionality is suppose to work in practice? Anyone else experiencing similar behavior?

Below are 2 examples of how the function is working for me today:

Example #1

  • Streaming music via Sonos App → Turn on TV to view any Roku Ultra video streaming app (i.e. Netflix, Hulu, etc.)
  • Outcome (AS EXPECTED) - Audio signal auto switches from streaming music to streaming app audio

Example #2

  • View any Roku Ultra video streaming app (i.e. Netflix, Hulu, etc.) → Switch to streaming music via Sonos App → Switch back to viewing any Roku Ultra video streaming app (i.e. Netflix, Hulu, etc.)
  • Outcome (NOT AS EXPECTED) - Audio signal does not auto switch from streaming music to streaming app audio and requires manual intervention

Setup:

  • Roku Ultra connected via HDMI 1 to Sony TV
  • Sonos ARC connected via HDMI 2 (ARC) to Sony TV

When you switch to listening to music, do you turn off the TV?

Sometimes, the TV is turned off and other times is left on. When switching from TV → Music, no issues are present as Autoplay would not need to be enabled.

What I have noticed is the following:

Autoplay Does Not Work Correctly - TV Turned On → Music (TV Still On) → TV Still On

Autoplay Works Correctly - TV Turned On → Music (TV Still On OR Off) → TV Power Cycle (w/ ~10 delay in Turning Back On) OR Streaming Device Power Cycle

Not sure if this is intended functionality

 


Update to Original Post

After speaking with Tier 2 Support, I’ve gain insight on the intended functionality of TV Autoplay:

  • TV Autoplay is only triggered when the TV is initially turned on
  • After the TV is turned on and you begin streaming audio to the ARC (via phone Spotify app, etc.), the only way switch audio back to TV is to complete one of the following:
    • Power Cycle TV or Streaming Player
    • Manually Switch to TV Audio via the Sonos App
    • Request Sonos Voice Assistant to switch to TV Audio
    • Toggle TV Autoplay setting off / on via the Sonos App

Will considered this a closed question based on this response!
