Currently my set up is this.   SKY Q, Samsung 4K TV, Beam and 2 x Play 1.  The surround sound works brilliantly.    The beam connects via EArc HDMI on the back of the TV

BUT I am ditching Sky due to massive cost increases and want to use Apple TV 4K instead.

I have set up the Apple TV 4k box and connected it to the TV.  The Sonos connections are all as they were before.  Apple TV 4 K settings show as Audio Format DD5.1 and Audio mode - Auto.

I  have some major issues trying to get the sound (and sync) to work properly and woud appreciate and help or advice on how to resolve.

  1.  How can I get Apple TV4K to allow my Sonos system to be “Default Audio” as no matter what I do the only ‘default’ that shows is TV speakers. Sonos will appear in Temp Audio but as soon as you swop apps/channels  that Temp setting reverts back to TV speakers.
  2. Even when changed to Sonos via Temp Audio the speech comes out of all 3 speakers instead of just the sound bar - so I am not getting surround sound but what appears to be , I guess , stereo sound but through all 3 speakers at once

As an aside.  I have the Now TV app on the Samsung TV and also on the Apple TV 4K.  Using the app inbuilt in the TV I get perfect surround sound.  Using the app on the Apple TV 4k, I do not.  I get the issues as above - as I do for everything via the Apple Box

To make matters worse. Using the Apple TV 4k box The lip sync is wildly different between the TV speakers setting and the temp audio setting.    If i watch having set to Sonos via the Temp audio setting the speech is pretty much bang on.  But watch with the setting as TV speakers - where the sound still come out of the Sonos  speakers - the speech is so so far out of sync.

I suspect I am not alone in these issues but maybe someone has found a way to resolve them?

Any help would be much appreciated

Hi @Shane_16, welcome to the Sonos Community!

I’m sorry to hear that you’re having issues with Apple TV working with your Sonos system.

I don’t use Apple TV myself, but I would assume the ‘Temp Audio’ option to select your Sonos system would be via Airplay and could explain why speech comes from all speakers when you use it. From looking online, you should keep the Apple TV setting set to ‘TV Speakers’ as the TV should automatically play to your Sonos system.

Reading your post, it seems like you have all the correct settings: While this is for a different issue, the first post in the following thread has the recommended settings for both Samsung and Apple TV:

With the Samsung and Apple TV settings matching what is in the above thread, this should hopefully resolve the lip-sync issues. If not, try following the steps in our article: TV audio and video are out of sync.

I hope this information helps!

Well i have found a way to get the sync close but its still not 100% in sync.  on the tv I have set audio to “passthrough”. On the apple tv i have set the audio to tv speakers.

But even with the above the sync is still not 100% - like it was when using Sky Q box.  I have made various adjustments to the audio delay on the tv.  This clearly affects the sync issue but it never fixes the issue.

interestingly.  If i watch say Prime video via the apple tv 4k box the lip sync is out.  But watch prime video using the tv’s inbuilt Prime app the lip sync is fine

So its back to using Sky Q for the time being and the TV’s inbuilt apps
