A hifi homecinema soundbar without dts support seems not up to date for me. Are there any plans to add dts support?

I'm disgusted with your decision not to support DTS. Ever other soundbar on the market supports DTS and just because tv's don't support it does not mean people don't want to use an optical switch. This is a huge mistake on sonos behalf and will make a lot of people question the want for a playbar seeing as there are a lot of better options available on the market. A once loyal sonos user

How can home theater at this price not support DTS. Many tv manufacturers support DTS. Your claim is now false Sonos.

@kokki.k I'm facing the same thing, after giving the proof of purchase. I hope sonos honors their word. They said they are checking if I bought my sonos under authorize retailers, the store I bought it from is the only Sonos distributor in Singapore. What is more frustrating is that they will refund in USD price of the item and not how much I bought it in Singapore dollars. So depending how this goes I might actually be losing a few hundred dollars

From my point of view Sonos is an unfrank pure profit organization:

 

Sonos buffaloed PLAYBAR owners for more than 12 month with ‘Under Consideration’
statements to make them keep a damn bad hardware not suitable to handle DTS 5.1
due to technically limitations.

I’m absolutely sure, Sonos knew at any point in time the DTS 5.1 solution a lot of their customers asked for will never ever work on those failure-by-design PLAYBARs.

Sure, optical output is not suited. You want to use HDMI - which is, by the way, also needed to get 5.1 sound from most TVs (e.g. Panasonic does not transmit 5.1 coming from the BlueRay player through the optical output, but just plain stereo).

Seems daft when every budget blueray player on the market can implement DTS. Even if it made 0.1% of playbar users happy, for the cost of implementing, surely it would be worth it ?

I get the position that its meant to be very easy to use and to have it connected to the TV optical out so it works each time, every time, but, SONOS, isn't the following true?

IT WOULD BE SIMPLE TO ADD
IT WOULD BE CHEAP TO ADD
IT WOULD NOT AFFECT THE DESIGN BRIEF OF SIMPLE TO USE
IT WOULD MAKE A VOCAL MINORITY VERY HAPPY.
IT WOULD PREVENT LOSS OF SALES THAT THIS ISSUE COULD BE CAUSING

My perception is that a direct connection of the source device (digital receiver, ps3, etc.) to the playbar produces FAR superior sound than going through HDMI first. I use a switch for optical cables (18€), so the use case to connect it to the TV does not apply to me and I imagine few others who really want to get their money's worth in terms of sound quality for a 1800€ home theatre. So now, if the source device produces DTS, that's a negative user experience. Is it really that costly to implement?

Call up a few local stores and see they have it set up. I heard it in a bby and looked up the model number of the tv to see if it passed Dolby or not. Also have them put in a blu ray that is Dolby and not...and do a blind test.

it works for me when u draw all my content through WDTV.

Try see if u under audio settings on W/E ur using to decide which audioformats your TV/Box/DVD/BR will output.

My WDTV can output to certain formats on optical. Like i can chose if the optical output can send AAC, DTS, etc., or all formats to the hooked up unit (playbar in this case)

Price is like 200 Euro. Includes mediaplyaer that can play anything: Netflix, ISO, MKV, AVI, MP4, Youtube, and everything else. It has 1TB internal storage, it WDTValso works as a NAS. My wife uses it to show pictures on the tv. And before we had wimp, we played all our music on sonos from the music library on the WDTV........ 200 Euro........

So easy that my wife operates it, just as easy as sonos 🙂

All unrequired transcoding, especially from ‘DTS 5.1’ to ‘PCM Stereo’ back to just ‘Virtual Surround’ ends up in a major loss of audio details and quality.

First I want to say that I am very disappointed about your decision. You are completely ignoring your customers needs. I own a 4 year old Sony TV which was not high-end at the time I bought it and it does support DTS output. So I cannot believe your TV - argument.

I already sent an E-Mail to the Sonos support and am looking forward to the offer.

@Thomas can you give us further information on the switch? I would prefer to have an automatic switch that automatically tunes to the right input depending on which device is being displayed on the TV screen. Does anybody have an idea on how this could be done?

I just learnt you have decided not to support DTS for the playbar. I am a play bar owner and am very disappointed by your decision.

I will still use it, as I still like it and have use for it. But like many other Sonos owners, this is such a disappointment. You are limiting your product for what could be a truly great piece of kit, right now it is just a very good one. Not aiming for greatness in such a high quality product is deplorable.

Look at the petition for DTS support and how many people are requesting it, look at reviews and the negative points listed against the play bar, and consider how many potential customers you are loosing. You have surely done all that already and came to your own conclusion. I hope one day you will reconsider it.

You're absolutely right - sound quality is all based on personal opinion.  I would encourage you to form your own, especially since you're already in possession of the PLAYBAR.

To answer your question, PLAYBAR was designed to be connected to your television's optical port to make it as simple and easy as possible and enjoy.  There are many people who love the way their PLAYBAR sounds and have never heard of PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS, etc.

If you enjoy the experience of your PLAYBAR but prefer Dolby Digital to PCM, you could consider converting a DTS signal to Dolby Digital.  There are several blu-ray players which transcode from DTS to Dolby Digital, and as long as your TV passes the DD signal, this could be a good solution for you.

Ultimately, if you're not satisfied with the way PLAYBAR sounds for any reason, we'll take it back.

In example DTS 5.1 is an audio stream with 6 separate channels intended for a system with 6 separate speakers: 1x Center, 2x Front, 2x Rear and 1x Subwoofer.

PCM is legacy two channels Stereo for two speakers: 1x Left, 1x Right

Virtual Surround Sound on the PLAYBAR in this case is recalculated from PCM for 4 speakers: 1x PLAYBAR simulating 1x Center and 2x Front, 2x PLAY:3 (or PLAY:1, but not PLAY:5) as Rear and 1x SUB as Subwoofer.

So you are going from 6 discret channels down to 2 channels and recalculate to 6 virtual channels for 4 Speakers.  

 

This is the SONOS vision of home theater entertainment. Period.

@conard- what are the setting you are using on your WDTV? I have a WD TV Live media player and do not seem to get Digital Dolby when I play DTS file through it. Please advise the settings you are using. My player is connected through HDMI to TV and through optical switch to the playbar. Thanks

Again, I encourage you to form your own opinion and I'm sure Bernd (who has made his opinion known) would agree.  If you don't feel the PLAYBAR is right for your setup, we'll be happy to take it back.
This is incredibly disappointing.  I'm a loyal Sonos customer (and posted a very favorable Playbar review on Amazon), and no I'm not going to leave the ecosystem based on this, but it WILL stop me from buying another Playbar for my 2nd TV.

While it is true that my two Samsung smart TVs do not pass through DTS (or DD for that matter), the SmartTV apps DO ABSOLUTELY SUPPORT DTS.  Specifically, Plex does.  I use Plex every day and I have to say the Dolby Digital sound through the Playbar is absolutely stunning.  I suspect that DTS would sound even better were it supported.  The "fake" surround sound you get with the PCM sound is not even close to the true surround experience.

I don't regret buying the Playbar, but I won't be buying another until this situation is remedied.  This strikes me as a selfish move by Sonos to avoid paying the DTS licensing fees.  Why else would you not do it?

Following a careful evaluation, we have decided not to implement support for the DTS audio format in PLAYBAR at this time.
 
PLAYBAR uses a single optical connection directly from your television and was designed this way to make it as easy as possible to set-up and enjoy great HiFi sound.  Most PLAYBAR owners connect PLAYBAR to their TV in this simple way. This is the intended setup for playing the sound from your TV.
 
Today, very few TVs pass a DTS-encoded audio stream through their optical output.  Instead, the TV or source device converts the audio signal automatically to PCM, which PLAYBAR supports.  This is how PLAYBAR plays DTS-encoded Blu-rays.
 
We are committed to supporting the existing and future ecosystem of streaming video services. Currently, popular streaming services do not use DTS and most use Dolby Digital encoding, which PLAYBAR supports.
 
We are aware that PLAYBAR is being connected by customers to devices other than the television. In this configuration, when PLAYBAR receives a DTS signal, it will not process the signal.  If you are not able to connect your PLAYBAR directly to your TV and would like to explore solutions, please click here

Just purchased a Playbar last week to go with a new Samsung TV, which outputs DTS.  Love the streaming capabilities and expansion possibilities.  Plan was to eventually purchase the sub and rear speakers.  Based on what I'm reading, I may have made a mistake buying the Sonus??
