Panasonic UB820 and Sonos Arc.

Hey everyone. 
 

So I understand that the Panasonic UB820 does not decode DTS on the fly to Dolby digital. 
 

It is my understanding however that you can manually select PCM for the output of DTS in the blu ray player, and it should send a signal to the Arc that it can read.  
 

I wanted to confirm this with anyone who has this blu ray player, and I was wondering what the quality of the audio you’re getting on DTS 4K blu rays are. Does it still sound decent? 
 

I bought an open box UB820 and could not get audio from a DTS disc even if I selected PCM as the output for the format. I’m wondering if maybe the player was faulty (I returned it because it was really beat up).

I have a Playbase, not an Arc, and the 420 which is essentially the same as the 820 in  most regards. I also have an entry level Panasonic tv I got at the same time. I get stereo with DTS based tracks. Doesn't matter whether I select bitstream or PCM. I suspect the TV and player sort it out regardless of the setting.

 

The quality is OK usually but stereo is not as engaging as surround sound. You notice the difference. The only disk I can think of that's different is on Terminator 2. It's DTS audio but gets upmixed quite well for some reason. I suspect it might have some prologic data in it as well.

 

If you are not getting any sound from DTS tracks I would look in the TV settings for a tweak that gets it working.

 

If I had an Arc I would also be looking for a TV that supports DTS. Sony still support it.

what do you mean by a TV that supports DTS? 
 

I have an LG C9 which can definitely pass it through , but the Sonos Arc does not support DTS 

 

Edit: I think i get what you’re saying. I think I wasn’t getting audio either because the player was faulty or the hdmi cable was faulty because I was also getting white spots flashing around the image. 
 

I am considering buying a brand new UB 

820 which would hopefully fix those issues. I just remember reading a thread where a guy set the UB820 to PCM and he was showing 5.1 surround in the Sonos app on DTS blu rays. Very odd.

Some TVs list support for DTS different to just passthrough. Someone here created a thread saying they got DTS working with a beam. They had a Sony 4k player and a Sony TV that had DTS support and he was supprised to get surround sound with DTS tracks. I suggested it was the fact the TV had support for DTS and it sorted it all out as the beam was connected by HDMI.

Ohhhh yes I remember that thread. I was wondering if he ended up figuring out if it was indeed the TV doing the work for him. Thanks for the replies. 
 

im honesty so bummed about the lack of DTS support with Sonos but I absolutely love my arc setup

Yeah it's the one downside for me but I think going forward with new 4k releases it will be less of an issue. New movies will tend to have Atmos tracks.
