Issues with Sonos Ace pairing in Sonos App

I tried pairing my Sonos Ace headphones with another device after having added them to my iphone and I couldnt pair them back in my phone. I had to factory reset them but it was super difficult to repair them back in my sonos app despite the headphones were appearing in my bluetooth settings. The app were not recognizing the headphones. This is innaceptable for headphones at this price point (500 USD)! 😡

Hi @Daniela Sierra

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

Sorry to hear of this issue you had with pairing your Ace headphones.

Please note that pairing Ace to a new device does not involve the Sonos app in any way. You only need hold the pairing button and go to the Bluetooth settings of your source device.

Please also be aware that it is best to break the connection to one device before attempting pairing with another. This should be done in the relevant device’s Bluetooth settings.

Finally, you can tell Ace to connect to two source devices simultaneously - just activate the multipoint connection option in the Sonos app when Ace is linked to the device running the app, and Ace will automatically connect to the last 2 devices it was paired with on power-up. If this was already activated, there would have been no need to re-pair your iPhone.

I hope this helps.

I have paired the Sonos Ace here with 4 devices, iPhone, iPad and two different brands of Bluetooth Transmitter - Once paired, the Ace will connect to the last/most recent paired device (if in range and powered on, or the last two devices if multipoint connection is enabled).

If the last BT paired device has its beacon disabled, or is powered off/out of range etc; then the Ace connection (on power ON) falls back to the previous pairing in the list and that device then takes priority over the connection to the other devices …and so on and so forth.

If I want to add a new device to Ace, that’s in BT pairing mode, I long press on the Ace power button until I hear the pairing tone to add/connect to that new device and it adds it to the top of the Ace pairings list.

What would be ‘a nice to have’ feature though is a display of all the Ace/device pairings listed in the Sonos App and to be able to switch between them in the App itself and prioritise the order in which the Ace connects to them, and to be able to remove/archive a previous pairing.

I’d personally prefer to archive a pairing, as that then allows them to be reinstated later and to have the option to delete the devices from the archive list instead.

Ah I realise now, I’m asking for far too much here - So just a list of Ace/device pairings will do in the Sonos App with the opportunity to switch the connection between them. (feature request)

‘Happy New Year’ to everyone here too. 🥳 🎧

@Corry P - I understand that the app is not required to pair, but then why does the app offer to pair the headphones and then DOES NOT WORK? Since it is paired via BT on my phone, the app should easily recognize the Sonos Ace. What’s so difficult about that? So, now I cannot use the app to manage the headphones? That makes no sense and make me want to return the headphones.

Hi @MatthewSee

For the Sonos app to be able to tell the headphones anything, the headphones would already need to be paired to the device running the app. So, I am not sure what you mean - could you please post a screenshot or two of what you see? Thanks.

The app can sometimes take a while to recognise that the headphones are connected - it may help to force-close the app and reopen it once the headphones are connected.

And, please ensure that your headphones are up-to-date:

To go through the update process, your Sonos Ace must be set up in the Sonos app and connected to your iOS or Android device via Bluetooth.

  1. Open the Sonos app for iOS or Android.
  2. Navigate to the Settings menu and select your Sonos Ace under the Headphones section.
  3. Under About, select Software Updates.
  4. Select Check for Updates.

I hope this helps.

Hi @MatthewSee

A colleague pointed out to me that it sounds like you might be trying to play content from the Sonos app on your Ace headphones - this is not possible, as the Sonos app does not by itself play content. It only provides an instruction to a “player” (a Sonos speaker or component) to play content, and Ace headphones are not classed as a “player” - they need an actual source of playback to be used on the device to which they are connected, such as, for example, the Spotify or Apple Music apps.

I hope this helps.
