Google Assistant - Vanished and cannot be added back on Beam (Gen 1)

As of November 20, after a long power outage of 12 hours, I noticed the following:

  • Google Assistant (GA) vanished - first noted with inability to turn on microphone, verified on Sonos App, on the Sonos Beam Gen 1.
  • Any attempt to re-add GA via either android or ios fails with different symptoms depending on the OS.    Android will not be able to locate any google assistant capable device in the ‘google assistant’ phase post linkage (SSO/OUTH) between google ↔ sonos;  IOS will get there error message ‘There may be a problem’.
  • Verified no former linkage exists in Google Home.
  • I added / removed the SONOS voice control successfully so the Beam is not mechanically challenged.

I’ve reviewed threads, cleared the beam to factory defaults and rebuilt, rebooted the router / sonos devices, all to no effect.   All Sonos devices and controller are up to date.   Still, no ability to add Google Assistant to the beam.

I’ve seen an email thread from three months ago that the GA feature / addition is currently not functioning, but I see no formal announcement of this.   With the value of time, it’s just cheaper to buy a google nest mini and get used to saying ‘hey google’ for home control and ‘hey sonos’ for music … which is honestly rubbish.

Before I waste hours on the phone, can I get an official word if Google Assistant is formally supported.

Frank

@Corry P on that note: thanks for your involvement and responses in this thread! Understandably, there are a lot of unhappy voices here, but without the attention and followup from you it would probably have taken a whole lot longer to diagnose, report and fix the issue. Truth is that support departments (like support via chat or phone) are often poorly equipped to identify actual technical issues vs user error. It helps a lot to have technical eyes on a topic like this one

Finally got to my remote location to rectify the problems with my Sonos One and Google Assistant, anxious to try the latest updates. So I did the following:  1) Deleted the Sonos app from S23+; Factory reset the Sonos One; 3) Rebooted the router; 4) Reinstalled the app 5) Rediscovered and installed the Sonos One and updated the One to latest software; 6) Tested that I could play music through the Sonos app (that worked); 7) Unlink  Sonos from GA; 8) Attempted to add Google Assistant through the Sonos app - this failed attempting to start GA as before; 9) Used GA to add Sonos - this worked halfway. I still cannot successfully ask GA to play music on the Sonos

My biggest gripe:  we pay a premium price for these products and have gotten truly rotten service this past year. We are acting as field testers for Sonos and placing their customer facing staff in a very bad position (as noted above, they are trying to help but are not able to impact Sonos’ bad decisions). It’s time to quit the ranks of Sonosheep (q.v. Isheep)

Hi @thesame

I am sorry to hear of these continued issues you are having with Google Assistant. I recommend you get in touch with our technical support team who have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your Sonos system and what it reports.

Hi SONOS Support,

I’ve just bought a SONOS Roam 2 and intended to use it under Google Home/Assistant and disappointed to find out there there is an issue with it even though all the online documentation indicates that it works.

Can you confirmed if this issue is resolved or not (Yes/No)?

If ‘Yes’ Can you please provide detailed instructions on how to get it working

If ‘No’ Can you please let us know when it will be fixed or will it be fixed?

Regards

I had this issue back in mid December. As per the beginning of Jan 2025, this issue had still not been resolved…but they marked my case “resolved” because I decided to switch back to Sonos Voice Control and Alexa. I asked them to let me know when Google Assistant support will be added back but not sure if they will.

The last I heard they were going to talk to Google about the issue but not sure if they ever did.

Also note though, that a lot of people using Google Assistant with their Google devices (ie Google Nest Mini) are having issues as well. This may be because of Google’s work in trying to integrate Gemini with Google Assistant but I’m not 100% sure.

PS. I’m sure if you talk to Sonos support, level 1 and 2 will say there is no “known issue with Google Assistant” (even though there evidently is).

Thank you for the clarification and understand that this is not an official support method though note that SONOS staff do contribute and mark issues as resolved.

I really want some clear guidance on where this issue is at? I’ve rang the technical support line a few times and get a different answer each time.

If it is resolved is it possible to publish clear instructions on how to fix the issue. What devices work (iPhone and/or Android) what version of the SONOS App etc etc…..

If not currently resolved when and if it will be fixed?

Hi @Brian10

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

Please be aware that Roam 2 does not support Google Assistant, and never has. I don’t know what online documentation you were looking at, but I suspect it may have been for the original Roam (if you know of documentation for Roam 2 that says that it does support Google Assistant, please provide a link and I will get it corrected - thank you).

So, I cannot provide instructions for how to get Google Assistant working on your Roam 2, nor can I say when it will work - it will not.

I hope this helps.

Hi Cory P,

I went back and bought a Roam instead of Roam 2 and still have issues setting up Google Assistant. It keeps saying device not found when linking up Google Assistant. Can you provide the exact steps required.

Brian
