There is a service notice about this posted now by Sonos now under Support, and it has been discussed in the “Update on the problems with Google automation routines” thread, but it deserves its own topic.

A couple of days ago Sonos speakers using Google Assistant stopped responding to any media playback commands from Google, including Play, Stop, Set volume etc., although basic Google Assistant commands like “Time?” and “Weather?” were still working. Only Google was affected - Alexa, Home Assistant and other services could still perform those functions through the Sonos api. So either Google has their own api, or Google was being specifically blocked.

Sonos suggests removing and re-adding Google Assistant from the speakers as the solution, but if you expect that to be less than straightforward, you’re not wrong. My Sonos app on Android successfully removed Google Assistant, but as others have been reporting for 5 months now, it could not re-add Google Assistant, getting stuck in a “No Connection - Retry?” loop. The workaround users came up with (no thanks to Sonos) is to use iOS instead of Android, Fortunately I have an up-to-date iPad, so I was able to do that. Final step necessary after re-adding Google Assistant to Sonos is that you must also re-authorize Sonos in Google Assistant.

Hello @Doug Ames, welcome back!

I am sorry to hear you were having issues with Google Assistant on your Sonos system, but I am glad you’ve now resolved them.

Allow me to add, if anyone is unable to add Google Assistant on the applicable Sonos products (Sonos Arc, Beam (Gen 1 and 2), Move, One, and Roam), feel free to reach out to Support Team for live troubleshooting.

They have tools at their disposal to provide you with information and advice specific to your Sonos system and what it reports.

Thank you for sharing what worked for you and I hope this helps others.

Just to let you know that I've had the same problem and just today doing some test I simply re-link sonos account inside Google home app, no need to reconfigure Google assistant on sonos just linked again via google home application, and seems to have worked. Now my sonos play and stop music as it used to. Fingers crossed. (I've used an android device)

This!! It’s not just about removing and reconnecting Google Assistant to each Sonos device, you need to remove Sonos from the Google Home app and reauthorize it. You need to do both.

Not in my case, I used to do it for each sonos speaker as you write but instead this time I've tried different approach. I've simply re-linked sonos account via the function "works with Google" inside the google home app. The same I've done for smartthings which suddenly didn't show the status of the speakers (play pause) and everything works since my last message without interruption
