It is amazing how in less than a year I have gone from telling everyone what a great system my Beam, Sub and Surround is both for music and TV to now warning everyone to avoid Sonos like the plague.

Sound system is still good but impossible to use because the app is now so useless.

Yes they are trying to fix it but still way off where it was pre upgrade.

I will not be buying Sonos kit again.

The real question is why don't they reinstate the old app until they get the new one sorted out AND tested.

As for the damage to the brand, remember New Coke? Where is it now?

The new UI (app) is built on top of a new framework that’s baked into the firmware. It’s why this “had” to happen because they announced headphones during an earnings call that obviously could not run on the old app and assumed between the app release and first shipment of the headphones any bugs would be fixed.

The Mac Sonos app works perfectly. It still has the S2 interface. I’m not sure I buy the “they had to” at all.

Mind you, it’s 2024 and they still haven’t added ARM support for Mac, but that’s another story.

I haven’t checked back on this in many many weeks because once I started using Plex amp, it didn’t matter anymore. I absolutely cannot believe that they are still in this level of shit show with everybody who owns their product.

If you use a local library of music. I cannot recommend Plexamp enough. What it’s added to exploring my library through Sonic analysis of my music is unbelievable. Every once in a while, when I need to use the Sonos app to connect machines or hit settings, it continues to amaze me how unbelievably unintuitive their user interfaces to do the most basic shit. And that’s the shit that actually can do which seems to be not everything that used to and not buy a longshot.

this will be a case study that’s referenced for years by business schools on how to destroy company value. What an utter shit show.

Hi @MattyJake Am I right in thinking that using the Plex solution means that your local library is being streamed through the cloud and back to your local speakers, in the same way that using the Plex service through Sonos does?

And do you have to pay for the Plexamp analysis that you describe?

Thanks

At home Plexamp is just broadcasting over my local network I believe. I guess I’m not 100% sure there. What I can say, which is even more amazing, is that I can access my local library through Plexamp wherever I am. What’s great about that you can set the file size went on cellular to compress the files on the flies so you don’t use as much data. And if you’re on Wi-Fi, no matter where you are, it streams the original quality file.

It also offers the kinds of features you get in Streaming services to create different types of dynamic playlist based on mood or the sonic qualities of music.

and you can cast to any speakers Or devices from whatever device you are playing on. They have a mobile device and a desktop device. So, for example, if you were on vacation and have a portable Bluetooth speaker, you can access Your local library with all the playlists you’ve created in Plex and play them there.

because I used to use Apple Music since it was iTunes and have created a ton of playlists, there, some of which are 20 years worth of creation, I found a service online that can translate playlists to different services. So I created Plex playlist for all of my old Apple playlists and now they are part of my Plex account.

altogether, it is a far better listening experience, and I am listening to much more of my extremely large music library than I used to because I can create playlist based on mood or listen to music by decade and other things. You also can tag all of your music for more complex, Plex allows for multiple genre tags style tags, and then mood tags.

if you listen to music on a local library, I can’t recommend it enough. If you want to be able to cast to other devices like Sonos speakers, I think you need to purchase Plex pass, which I bought 15 or more years ago. I think it was $150 for a lifetime license when I bought it, which was primarily to manage my movies and TV shows

Can you add removing the never ending reminder of the update that appears on my iPhone each and every morning at 06:30 memeorializing the alarm I had set that no longer existed as an feature. Since the update occured overnight when this alarm was set it persists but there is no way to remove it.

The alarm has thankfully been silenced but the reminder has not

Thank you very much @MattyJake. Sure you’re not a Plex salesman? 😁

I am going to install Plex Media Server on a PC, point it to my music folder, and see how things go. I realise that if I want always-available music I’ll need to run something like a Raspberry Pi or NAS, but for now I think I can test a lot of the functionality before committing to anything.

Looks like Plex Pass Lifetime is £95 GBP. Apparently Black Friday and Christmas offer really great discounts. I am not a movie person, so will only be using Plex for music. I like that I can just pay for a month of Plex Pass if I wish.

Thanks again. Great to find insightful individuals in the Sonos community.

I have tried and tried to live with the deteriorated version, but it’s no good. Was planning on getting more speakers, but now my wife has bought a portable Bose Bluetooth one so she can stream from her phone without issue.
Now I have an expensive Sonos system around the house that can only reliably play the radio!!

I approach the recently published article about the company rebuilding trust of its customers with mixed feelings, though I genuinely hope Sonos can turn things around. This morning, I counted 23 Sonos speakers in my home. When I started building my system a decade ago, Sonos was the gold standard, and I stayed loyal to the brand until about three years ago. Unfortunately, the system has become unreliable, and I've lost confidence in it. Last month, I even bought a backup Bose speaker for a party, just in case my Sonos system failed. Unsurprisingly, the Bose saved the day. I sincerely miss the quality and reliability Sonos once offered and hope they can restore it.

My wife has just done the same, so we have a portable Bose Speaker to replace the several Sonos speakers around the house!!  Madness

I am becoming more and more infuriated by this app update. It is very sluggish, and wonky. And it eliminated one of my favorite functions, the ability to edit a queue. This was a disimprovement on so many levels. Why couldn't Sonos leave well enough alone? I've already had close to $1000 worth of purchases rendered obsolete by earlier updates.

Forum|alt.badge.img

Months on and literally none of the problems I had have been sorted, have to constantly restart app to connect to my system and can still not search/play any of my music I uploaded to my YouTube music account.

And every time my beam updates the lip syncing is all out of whack again.

It beggars belief that Sonos thought it was a great idea to change the UI, the architecture of the system and add functionality for a new product line all at the same time.

You forgot that they also removed HTTP and SMBv1 access to local music too … but left the wizards available in the desktop apps just to really confuse people.

Will the S1 app work with the newer devices?  Other then Plexamp, does anyone have any suggestions for a third party app in place of the disastrous S2 app?

Sonos is terrible and has been for many, many months.

The app is utter rubbish.  Yes, it’s improved ever so slightly, but it’s still hopeless.

And the speaker set-up is a convoluted mess.  Compare that to an Alexa speaker which just works once plugged in!

I’ve bought 20+ Sonos speakers over the past several years but I won’t buy Sonos again for home or work.  And I now tell everyone I know to buy Amazon instead.

From being a “cool” brand, Sonos is now a brand to avoid.  Plus it’s very, very expensive for what it offers.

I wholeheartedly couldn’t agree more.
I have thousands of pounds worth of speakers.  I have been a flag carrier from the beginning with the first generation Sonos 1’s.   The manner in which the customer base has been treated is nothing short of diabolical.  I wanted something to take away with me on my travels and looked at the Sonos Roam; then I reminded myself of the utter trash that has been forced upon as in the form of the App and the disregard in which we have been treated.  I bought a JBL.  Similar outlay and seamless Bluetooth connectivity.

i would NEVER recommend Sonos to a friend. Their time of grace has passed.  The App has only improved marginally and my system is effectively worthless.
Sonos will never get another penny from me.

disgusted,

All this talk about features is still missing the biggest issue. Once all the features are restored it will still be a terrible application. Every interaction is tedious, slow to update on screen, slow to respond and play.

The old architecture - the basics of interacting with your speakers quickly and snappily is “the thing” that made Sonos  great.

And I continue to urge - please go back to the old app and make whatever changes you need to the firmware to go back too. Because after 6 months I now hate Sonos and advise against buying them.

why can’t you just take the medicine and plot a path  to roll back, and end this madness.

Since the last android update 80.09.04, everything works at 90%. Only the logo images of the stations are not displayed in the chosen player (or group) when starting playback.

Two Play5-2 in stereo, 2 era100, 1 play one, 1 roam, on Devolo CPL network, wifi 6 in 5 Ghz. Services: Spotify, Radioplayer, Radio France, MyTuner, SonosRadio.

This needs to be repeated.

I have been saying this on here since the very first day I received the updated iOS version. The app was designed around one product, clearly. It’s unintuitive and cumbersome, and Sonos is making it so that every time someone with their product wants to listen to music, they curse the brand.

How they still refuse to see what is happening, what many of us warned would happen, can only be ascribed to willful ignorance and hubris.

For those keeping track, Sonos locked out the old app. Sonos refuses to fork the app and allow people to use the working version. Sonos is the organization gaslighting you into believing you’re not able to run the old app on your hardware.

Here is the firmware my system is running. The old app, on an Android tablet, works perfectly.

Sonos is being untruthful in a vain attempt to salvage their ego and tarnished reputation.

Finally, to all the other installers out there: Good luck getting retirees to use this trash. The app is a nonsensical mess, and customer “uninstalls” are a thing more than ever before.

Seriously...I’ve been waiting too long.  My family is getting tired of not being to use the system anymore and I’m tired of needing to focus on the app to do basic things like pause the music or turn down the volume.  Forget being an ambassador for this product anymore, my focus now is getting it to work so that I don’t need to rip it all out and buy a completely different system.  I’ve invested a lot in your platform over the years and I feel completely betrayed.

Very simple question: I’ve four Five’s in two Stereo Groups. Why can’t Sonos keep track which is which?

All I want to do is Airplay from Spotify … and occasionally use a Bluetooth speaker elsewhere. Sonos is completely unable to connect to Spotify in a meaningful way.

I had to delete Spotify from the Sonos apps - otherwise it wouldn’t relent control to the Bluetooth speaker. Now I can still connect from Spotify to the two rooms. But more often than not, they are swapped …

Can Sonos hire a programmer with a decent grasp of what pointers are good for in software?

Thanks! Stefan

PS: Yes, this is six months after these jerks said they want fix the problem.

Your questions don’t make any sense. You say you want to use AirPlay, but then complain about the Sonos app, which isn’t in the middle of the AirPlay 2 event.

Sonos also has no control over the Spotify app which you seem to be complaining about with regards to swapped speakers.

Have you submitted a system diagnostic within 10 minutes of experiencing either of these problems, and called Sonos Support to discuss it?

There may be information included in the diagnostic that will help Sonos pinpoint the issue and help you find a solution.

When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.

Well - your answer doesn’t show a deep understanding how Sonos (tries to) work.

I deleted Spotify from the “services” (strange word) in Sonos App. But of course it still intercepts the traffic to allow grouping of multiple Airplay devices.

So … just now: I Airplayed from Spotify to the Dining Room. It was a bit loud. To tune down the volume, Spotify didn’t pop-up Volume sliders (didn’t seem under control here…). So I went to Sonos app and changed volume - nothing changed.

I popped up the system popup and saw it thought it plays to Living Room, although the enable tickmark was on Dining Room.

No, I don’t have time to call support to help their basic regression testing.

My feedback on the new Sonos app. I am running the latest version of the IOS app and have a request. As I’ve mentioned a number of times, it would be really nice if it didn’t take you back up to the top of your playlist each time you exit a window or click on the playlist icon in the lower bottom left corner of the Now Playing window, but instead returned you back in the queue to where you were. And the other nice feature would be to add a number of tracks to each playlist when searching through your playlists. That little number at the top would help me know if I’m grabbing the most recent version of that particular playlist. And one last thing, please add a save button somewhere in order to save any changes. Preferably at the bottom of each window like the old app used to have. And that is my Christmas list to Santa.
