Warning, there’s a new firmware update available 16.2 or maybe it’s 80.00.xx

If you don’t have auto updates turned off now would be the time if you don’t want to risk it, especially if you are still on 16.1

If you update please let us know the good/bad.

I definitely want to know what’s in this update before installing.

Yeah not gonna risk it, might delete the ability play sounds, joking, but also doesnt seem impossible

I have updated to firmware 16.2 and no issues. It updated all devices first time as well and pretty quick. Usually I need to run the update a couple of times and it takes an age. This one was pretty slick.

Also worth noting I noticed on REDDIT people were now seeing LOSSLESS on Apple Music via the app after this formware update. I am seeing the Lossless tag

I risked the firmware upgrade to v16.2 and now using the latest Sonos app v80.x.x the audio output always wants to default to my Beam in the bedroom, if I select my Era speakers only in the living room then at the bottom of the app it’s still set to the Beam in the bedroom and it changes itself back as well in the output setting. So only wants to default speaker output to my Beam regardless of me changing it.

crap firmware and app now 😤

I am not experiencing this behaviour on any of my devices.

Lucky for you then 😁

the app was working fine prior to the new firmware update. So ?

I’ve read about this behaviour with the new app in prior days so likely an app bug. Add it to the list

So does the 16.2 app  (from System Update in the 16.1 app) basically install the v80 app ?

I am back on 16.1 and sticking with that (downloaded it to go back after the awful v80 landed)

Oh actually my bad, I may of been getting confused, I was getting the issue described but I did not realise you can slide the volume bar at the bottom up and then highlight your speaker, so it does work ok now.

Not leaving the old S2 app or 16.1 ever

I will be replacing all of my speakers as I can, music in my main room first 👍

hopefully they will fix the new app eventually and I can recoup some money back

I am not interested in a web based app at all, I was asked to beta test this web based system a few weeks ago but I deleted the mail and ignored it, I then turned off auto update on everything as I saw the writing on the wall….

Do not update the device firmware as you will need to update the app AFAICT.

It’s difficult to imagine how they could even deliberately manage this situation worse.  Complete lack of communication today and now stick a firmware update in there that will remove the option for Android users to reverse the recent App update.

Here’s how it could be worse. I did the firmware update to 16.2. It removed my old Music Library from the Sonos system. Gone. I checked with the desktop app. It’s gone. And now it looks like it can’t be added back because it’s on an old NAS using SMBv1.1. It’s internal to my network, has no outside access. Who cares if the protocol is insecure. I’ve being using Sonos since 2006 and I think this is the last straw.

Yeah as suspected don’t update if you still have access to 16.1  not my photo, copied from:

I don’t mean to upset you, but they have been putting out notices somewhere about SMB1 being removed in an upcoming update. I do think it is quite folly of them to be doing it right now. It’s been an major security issue for like a decade, so why remove it now amidst all of this app feature removal nonsense.

Yeah with the release of the new app I noticed some of the Sonos reps say that smb1 was no longer supported, which I found weird because it was still working , still does in 16.1

I agree it’s dumb that they would drop this now as I’m sure there are people wondering wtf is going on and assume it’s an app bug.

There is also an old Sonos bug that prevented some library scans on smb2/3 - the workaround was to turn on smb1 to scan.Cant do that anymore. Hopefully they fixed this, but I’m guessing not.

Well, that was my thinking. It would be crazy to remove it right now, so It caught me by surprise. I have a newer small WD NAS so I mounted the older Netgear READYNAS into a new share on the WD. Then pointed Sonos at the WD share for the local music library. It works.

Release notes.

80.00.04

Release date: 5/13/2024

In this update:

  • Added lossless audio support for Apple Music.

  • Bug fixes and performance enhancements.

Alerts:

  • Sonos systems no longer support local library shares that use SMBv1 / HTTP. If your library was shared with Sonos using one of these older protocols, you can add it back to Sonos by manually sharing your music folder using SMBv2 or SMBv3, then adding it back to your system using the Sonos app for macOS or Windows.

It would have been nice if they had put up the release notes prior to the update instead of after. Of course if your NAS doesn’t support SMBv2 or SMBv3, it can’t be added back.

BREAKING: I am running the new app (80.00.88) on some devices and the old app (16.1) on other devices, and I can confirm that the 16.2 firmware does not barf on v16.1 controllers. YMMV, natch.

Hi, I have an Arc and 2 X Ones with a Gen 3 Sub.

Have updated to 16.2

In the EQ section of the App, the L R Balance isn't working and the loudness toggle isn't either - any suggestions? Having the balance working would be so helpful  Tks

There is a new app update 80.00.08

You also need to update the speakers from 16.1.1 to 16.2. After that, you see the alarms.

Sounds like a good news, in particular for those who want to finally get the long-awaited lossless audio in Apple Music but want to stay with the good old 16.1 app for a while, not the new messy 80.xx one.
So are you saying that you don’t see any issues or limitations in you setup with 16.1 controllers and the latest 16.2 (80.00.04) firmware?
Can I ask which Sonos system(s) do you use?
I’m particularly interested about Era 300.

Thanks!

Which App version are you using? The new 80.xx or the old 16.1 one?
