Victrola Stream Onyx - Can anyone explain?

I couldn't resist a screaming deal on a SONOS compatible turntable. Woot.com is (at the moment) offering the Victrola Onyx for just $250 new, including shipping for Amazon Prime. I see mixed reviews with some people completely raving about it and others running into problems. I just set it up and while not completely painless, it just required a little patience and less than a half-hour. It is connected via Ethernet. (I also tried WiFi which worked fine too.)

It's playing right now and I am very pleased with the quality and how well it's working at the moment. But it is a little peculiar. It does require using the Victrola Stream app. Once it's playing, I can control volume effortlessly via the SONOS app. I can also set up which speakers are playing (and I have quite a few) via the SONOS app, but only sometimes. That's the weird part.

Changing the connected speakers takes more time than normal. I've got it all set up and working now but I'm not at all confident it's going to work this way next time. Here's another oddity:
On the mobile app (iPhone), it shows "Unknown" as the music source. But if I go to my MacOS app, "Victrola" is displayed. Then again, Victrola never appears in either app as a choosable Music Source. The only way I've been able to get the turntable to start playing is via the Victrola app.

None of this is a real problem if I can figure out how I got here and get back here again without any problems or significant delays. So maybe if I could understand what and how things are happening I can figure out how to continue to make it happen this way when I want. As I write this, I'm listening to some great sounding music that isn't available digitally.

Hence my question:
Can anyone explain how this combination works and the easiest methods to get here?

@RangerDog

Just my suspicion… but i think the victrola app and firmware could still be on old s2 system standard and isn’t optimized for new s2 software. So that might be the reason why now it‘s sold much cheaper. That also would explain why it’s working quite better with Sonos desktop controller, because the dc is based on old s2 system standard.
But as already said… i‘m just suspicious.

Hi

Sorry to hear you are having issues. @Schlumpf may be onto something. However, this is a Sonos Community. Someone may see your post and offer assistance. How long that may take is anyone’s guest.

I did find the following on the Victrola website. Maybe you did as well.🤔  That aside, I would suggest following the General Trouble Shooting steps below and failing that contact Victrola Stream Support.

Also, make sure your iOS and MacOS are up-to-date.

Good Luck!

Do the Victrola Stream turntables work with older generations of Sonos?

General troubleshooting:

Check to see if your turntable and Sonos speakers are up to date by going into the Victrola Stream app, clicking your turntable, going to "About turntable" and hitting "Check for Update." Update if needed and let the turntable reset for about 2 minutes.

For your Sonos system, open the Sonos app, click the bottom right settings wheel cog, click system, scroll down to system updates, and then click "Check for updates." Once that is complete, force close both apps and open them again and retry connecting the systems together.

Next, check your router or your app for your router and ensure there are no updates required for this device. If there are, update and wait for the system to reset.

@RangerDog

I have owned the Victrola Stream Onyx since this past October.  I love being able to listen to my record collection that has been gathering dust for years.  The quirky behavior you describe takes a little getting used to. I spoke to Victrola customer service in the early days, because I was confused as well.  They told me that the turntable would NOT show up as a source in the SONOS app.

You are doing things the right way.  Either have autoplay selected in the Victrola app or start the stream by choosing a speaker in the Victrola app.  Then manage speakers/groups/volume in the Sonos app.

I did just get a big update to Victrola software/firmware last night that really seemed to improve responsiveness and opened new features including bluetooth connectivity.  You still have to start a session in the Victrola app first, unless you have autoplay selected.  Once you get used to it, it is a pretty impressive piece of hardware!
