Local library browsing on Android App

Forum|alt.badge.img

Two points, and I’m not the first one to discuss either, but I want to be sure that the issues stay flagged:

  1. A-Z scrolling in Local Music Library.  The app is almost unusable for moderate to large libraries without it.
  2. Ability to see “Contributing Artists”.  The Windows App still does it.  For Compilation Albums, we currently have to choose between having every song in the album show up as its own album, or combine them by tagging ALBUMARTIST as “Various Artists”, but then lose the ability to see the actual artist of each song.  All competitors, including older versions of yourself, have this working properly.

The Trello board has gone stale, and release notes recently have been non-specific.  What is your plan these days?

Did you find what you were looking for?

Hi @El_Magnifico

Thanks for your post!

  1. This has been requested several times - I have not yet heard any word about it coming back or not, so cannot tell you any more than you have presumably already heard.
  2. I am not sure what you mean by this. As shown in the screenshot below, I am able to see the contributing artists of a compilation album. Search also picks up the contributing artists. Have you ensured that all the tracks have the correct tagging? Could you please post a screenshot if you do not see something similar?

Regarding the Trello board, I understand that some of the recent staff losses have affected it getting updated. Our apologies. We aim to update it very soon.

I hope this helps.

Search will indeed pick up both the Album and Contributing Artists; I agree there.  (Search, by the way, works very well; it is one of the good things about the new app that we don’t talk about much!)

But Local Library browsing by Artist will not find Contributing Artists in Compilation Albums.  It only finds Album Artists, or track artists who do not have the Album Artist set to “Various Artists”.

Yes, I am certain that the library is tagged correctly -- it still works fine with the Windows App (which has an option to “Show Contributing Artists”), and it worked fine, of course, with the pre-May-2024 software.  For that matter, it works fine with Windows Media Player, Logitech Squeezebox, etc.

Windows app, with option to view contributing artists.  When checked, Windows App acts as would be desired.  This option is not present in Android App, nor does it default to “acting properly”.

Hi @El_Magnifico

Ah yes - I see what you mean.

Personally, I would not want every artist from the contributing artists of compilation albums filling my own Artists section, but I can see why some - like yourself - would.

I was about to say I would mark this thread as a feature request (which I will still do for you regarding the alphabetical list at the side), when I happened to look into my Composers section and found all the artists contributing to my compilation albums. So, we do list them, just not in the same section as the album artists. You can probably guess that I prefer this, but I hope you also find it a satisfactory arrangement.

I hope this helps.

That may be a workable solution -- though looking at my own library, I have not religiously tagged the “Composer”, unlike “Artist” and “Album Artist”, which means I (and others) would need to go through my entire library and duplicate “Artist” onto “Composer” in these situations.  I can certainly do that, and may go ahead and do so, but I can’t stress this enough -- this is not a new feature request!  This is how the system used to work, and even still does on the Windows App.

Hi @El_Magnifico

Please be aware that this did not require any extra tagging on my part - as far as I am aware, none of my music has the Composer tag filled in. I presume it is only doing this when the album is a compilation (though I don’t know how it makes that distinction).

I hope this helps.
