Adding a record player to Sonos home theatre (Era 100 or Victrola Onyx Stream)

I have been down rabbit holes and understand the limitations around my Beam (gen 2), 2 x Era 300, and Sub-mini. Being a 40 year old man, I obviously am getting into records and deciding which record player to get. Now since my Era 300’s are set up as surround sound I know I cannot use the line-in or BT, also the position of the era 300s doesn’t lend itself to where i would want my record player or run a line, so, my questions:

  • if I get an additional Era 100 and a bluetooth enabled record player, can I have them in different, but close locations, and can it daisy-chain to all other devices when listening to records (by setting they as a separate room)
  • if I get the the Victrola Onyx Stream, is this a work around to use my existing set-up since it is wireless (over WifI)?

Thanks all!

If you purchase an Era 100 you can connect any turntable to it via line-in using the proprietary Sonos Line-in adapter or if it is bluetooth (BT) enabled you can connect to it via BT. Any turntable used will need a pre-amp either built-in or 3rd party outboard. Once connected to the Era 100 you can Group as many Sonos speakers as you like to the Era 100 to enjoy Turntable audio throughout your Sonos system

It’s not a work-around approved by Sonos. In fact Sonos doesn’t publish work-arounds of any sort. Sonos users have found interesting ways to make Sonos suit their needs. However according to Victrola Onyx Stream marketing it can connect to a Sonos system. In doing so Sonos does not offer any support for the Victrola Onyx Stream

Thanks all!

Yes, to both. Era100 will support sharing a Bluetooth source when grouped with other speakers. You could also use the line  in adapter with the Era100 to connect a turntable with a phono preamp. Using line in you do not need to group, you can just select line in as the music source. The Victrola Stream seem to work well from a connectivity point of view. I just find them to be a mediocre turntable for the price.

Is an external pre amp better than an internal?

That’s a debatable question. You’ll get a variety of answers that mainly boil down to personal preference. My preference is an external Pre-Amp. I’ll not open a can of worms as to why I prefer an external pre-amp as this post would be hi-jacked/side tracked from the original posters question.  However, using an internal pre-amp makes for less clutter meaning not adding another component and cables to the mix.

I thought an external may be more powerful and provide a better output to the speakers.

Here’s an article on internal vs external pre-amp for turntables. I hope it answers your question. 😊

I agree in general to 3rd party workarounds…

BUT… The victrola device has got the official Works With Sonos WWS certification. And to get this you have to accept and support very hard requirements that Sonos demands. So Sonos imo indirectly will „support“ any WWS certified product and for users that really is some kind of guarantee the product will work well with Sonos.
