Updates removed my local music library and now I get Error code 913

How do I fix it?  I have an iphone with the new app, my spouse has an iphone with the old gold app, our music is in an itunes folder on a windows laptop.  The music library is gone on all of them, and I get Error 913 when I try to add the music folder back to Sonos on the laptop.  Our speakers are useless without this - we don’t use streaming services, just our music library.  Do I need to get rid of the Sonos system now because local music isn’t an option anymore???

Okay, this thread has gotten long, I had to spend way too much time figuring out mine, and there seem to be multiple possible solutions that are getting buried and harder to find.  So I’m going to try to list links here and pin this as a group best answer.

All of these have to be done on the desktop software.  There is no option to add a music library folder in the app that I’ve seen.

Also, please remember that Sonos seems to be moving things into the cloud, without extra security like multi-factor authentication.  I am not an IT person but I think there could be security risks depending on how your computer has sharing set up (for example: if you give Sonos more than “read” access, or if you give the Sonos software a computer administrator password, or if you make your computer visible on a network but don’t have your file sharing password-protected).  Other more IT-experienced people might be able to say more about that.

  • The simplest option for Windows:  Trying to share your music folder on a PC with Sonos listed as a windows user account in the settings.  @HelpingIsKind and @Scrubbrush posted about how to do that:
  • If the simplest Windows option didn’t work, or you don’t have Sonos listed as a user account: The first way didn’t work for me even though I had Sonos listed as a user.  I have no idea why.  But it is possible to share your music folder on a PC with any windows user account, and then trick the Sonos desktop software into thinking it is looking at a networked drive. @press250 wrote about how to do it and I wrote about what I did on my computer in other threads:
  • If you have a Mac: @ECS3, @m-m-i, and @salami slices wrote about how to do it:
  • If none of these work: From what I’ve read, Sonos stopped supporting SMB1 for file sharing and maybe that has something to do with it. @peterlip mentioned how to check it in Windows and @Chlorine suggested another way to start looking at it for a networked drive:
  • If it still doesn’t work: That really stinks, but there are a lot of helpful people here who can maybe offer more ideas if you keep posting.  Plus I think Sonos needs to keep hearing it.

This is not a great fix, but I see that you can add a Plex server. if you put all your music on that and join in the app. I think that will work good. It did for me.

Cheers, but not going to work as it now requires 10.13 to install the Media Server. 😕

SAME PROBLEM HERE. I do not use a NAS but I still get this 913 error. I had a text chat with support, submitted diagnostics, told that it was a NAS problem. Said I do not have a NAS, my music is all on my Mac. Told to call support - wait time of 65 minutes only to be cut off. This is a disgrace and outrage.

Don't worry about being cut off.  I waited and spent over an hour talking to the tech who was genuinely trying to help. Their "work around" will not work, period!

After the conversation shown above, I called Apple and was told they could not help solve the Sonos problem, so I blocked out several hours and called Sonos, sitting on hold about an hour before a tech human picked up the phone. He actually knew what to do, and once I gave him control of my MacBook he went in and made whatever the necessary change is. I wish I had recorded that, so I could pass on the steps; however at least I can confirm that it’s possible to fix the problem. Good luck.

Thanks for the update - when I get the time I will call Sonos to see if they can do the same for me.

I did the same but it didn't work.

I’ve done everything suggested. I was eventually able to add my music library, but now none of my imported playlists are there. (Mac running Sonoma 14.5)

Anyone have any ideas?

Also -- Sonos says they fixed the local library in the latest update. Is that true or are there more updates to come? That might actually fix the issue?

I have just installed the latest (v16.3) MacOS update. Guess what - nothing is fixed.

Don’t bother with this (again).

Looking at prices for Sonos components on eBay - average is £50-£100 per item. A big loss on my investment, but it looks like investing in an alternative system (Apple HomePods?) is the only way forward. I’ll wait for one more update, then call it a day.

Shame.

The app update this week was partly successful, at first. I was able to 'find’ the music folder on the drive connected to my notebook and load the contents into Sonos.  It played well all day (Wednesday).  That was Wednesday.  Come Thursday, at the first attempt to play some music the app could not play anything in the queue, the ‘unable to play ...’ message box appeared.  When i tried to update the music library, it began to index and then just disappeared. Since then i've been unable to reload the music folder and however i try i get a mix of ‘access is denied’ and 913 errors.

What's never come back since May is of course access to my network located music folder.

The update is really unstable and i still can't load the network folder.  How long is this going to persist?

Happy Friday.
