Airplay from macOS can not connect to Era 100

Airplaying from macOS to an Era 100 does not work. The speaker is discovered, but when I try to select it, I get a generic error saying “Could not connect to “<Speaker name>””.

This is highly specific to macOS (laptops in my case, 3 of them) and the Era 100.

Using Airplay on macOS to my other Sonos products (Port, Beam, Play:1) works without issue. Direct play from Spotify on macOS to the Era 100 works as well.

Likewise using Airplay from an iPhone to the Era 100 works.

Sonos chat support was unfortunately unable to help after extensive troubleshooting, will have to call in, but judging by other posts, this seems to be a Sonos issue considering its specific to one speaker model.

If anyone has had any luck getting an answer from their phone support it would be appreciated to post the solution here. Otherwise I fear that there is nothing to do but wait for Sonos engineers to prioritize this.

@markus1983

You may have seen my original post (below) to this topic from 3 months ago. I’m looping back with this update.

  • MacOS is now Sequoia 15.4.1
  • I ran the test to a Stereo Pair of Era 100’s with Sub Mini
  • I also ran the test via Mac mini_M4 alternately over Ethernet and WIFI

All tests successful.

Below are my specifications for my Mac’s and the test procedure I used to try and reproduce your issue; which I could not. I ran the tests on each of my Mac’s. Airplay was successful in each test scenario. There’s obviously a network, software or version issue that is preventing you from using AirPlay to an individual Era 100 from your Mac.

I ruled out that the WIFI is turned off for the speaker as you say you can reach it via Airplay from your other device. I might ask if you have any Range Extenders on your network and/or if WIFI is disabled on your Mac?

Range Extenders can be problematic and yes they may affect one device and not another.  Also if you have a Mesh WiFi make sure that the satellites do not have DHCP rights to create/assign IP addresses.

Sonos does have the ability to do a screen share session wherein they can see your setup in real time. If you haven’t been offered such by Sonos; I would request it.

Apple Music ver. 1.5.2.56

MacOS Sequoia 15.2

  • Mac Studio_M1
  • MacBook Pro 16 Inch_M2
  • MacBook Pro 14 Inch_M3
  • Mac Mini_M4

I removed Era 100’s as surrounds to a bedroom Sonos system which resulted in Era 100’s reverting to separate rooms (Sony 2 and Sony 3)

Using the Airplay speaker selection icon in Apple Music:

  1. Airplay to each individual Era 100 as a stand-alone room by checking the individual box
  2. Airplay to Era 100 simultaneously by checking the room box for each
  3. Stopped Airplay to one Era 100 by unchecking the room box and leaving the other room box checked
  4. Reversed #3 above

All tests successful 👍

Good luck to get your issue resolved.

Edit: You may need to contact Apple support for assistance as Airplay is their product and you may have a corrupted MacOS. Apple Advisors can also screen share in real time. One more possibility the Network Interface Card (NIC) could be failing on your Mac

It still does not work for me. My Macs will not connect via AirPlay to my Sonos 100s. By the way, since my original post, I added a new M4 MacBook Air. It also will not AirPlay to the Sonos 100s.

I can also confirm that I am still able to AirPlay audio from my MacBook Pro M3 to a stereo pair of Era 100s and a Sub Mini.

To those not able to AirPlay via MacOS to Era 100’s

1. Have a friend use their MacBook to see if they can AirPlay to your Era 100’s. You’ll have to setup your Sonos on their Mac temporarily and not use a Guest network.

2. Purchase another Era 100 to test with AirPlay using your Mac’s. Return it when done but be sure to make note of the serial number (take a picture of the SN on the box). Yours could be part of a defective batch that was released.

The above assumes there are no switches or access points involved on your network. Although you say you can AirPlay to other Sonos using your Mac so it may be a moot point?

If #1 proves successful then there’s a MacOS issue with your Mac. Suggest you call Apple. If not call Sonos; but suggest you try #2 first to strengthen your case.

If #2 proves successful then it’s the Era 100’s that are defective. Suggest you call Sonos.

Hi gang!

I’ll jump back in. Since my previous post, I’ve spent a couple of hours on the phone with Apple and Sonos about this issue.

To recap: I see the same problems with Airplay from MacOS on 3 different Macs, with 2 different OS versions (Sequoia and High Sierra). Also with 2 pairs of Era300s on two different networks (home and office). As well as with an Era 100. I can Airplay without issue from my Mac to any of the older speakers (One, One SL, Arc). I have no issue with Airplay from an iOS device to any Era speakers, on either the home or the work network. Problem is confined to Mac only.

Based on all that testing, Apple ruled out any OS issue on their end.

I had a couple of more calls with Sonos about the issue.

Now it’s been escalated to Level 3 support at Sonos.

I imagine that means they will eventually figure out the issue and package an update into a future release. No telling when that will be. I was told that I would not received any follow-up from the Level 3 team.

So now, I wait.

Has it worked for you? Otherwise it seems like a technical issue.

OK… @shanewatson

Are you asking a question in response to another OP’s issue with AirPlay to Era 100’s or are you saying it worked for you?
