Airplay from macOS can not connect to Era 100

Airplaying from macOS to an Era 100 does not work. The speaker is discovered, but when I try to select it, I get a generic error saying “Could not connect to “<Speaker name>””.

This is highly specific to macOS (laptops in my case, 3 of them) and the Era 100.

Using Airplay on macOS to my other Sonos products (Port, Beam, Play:1) works without issue. Direct play from Spotify on macOS to the Era 100 works as well.

Likewise using Airplay from an iPhone to the Era 100 works.

Sonos chat support was unfortunately unable to help after extensive troubleshooting, will have to call in, but judging by other posts, this seems to be a Sonos issue considering its specific to one speaker model.

If anyone has had any luck getting an answer from their phone support it would be appreciated to post the solution here. Otherwise I fear that there is nothing to do but wait for Sonos engineers to prioritize this.

Another update: I was WRONG!

I tried last night, just to be sure. And, I can no longer Airplay to my home Era 300 pair, or either of the Era 100’s that are in separate rooms. Dang.

That’s from Macbook that doesn’t work. iOS continues to work perfectly. And I can still Airplay from the Macbook to the Arc, Move or Ones. Seems confined to Era speakers only.

I guess I’ll try and get this escalated with Sonos. Surely it’s something the engineering team will have to solve with an update. And if enough people do not complain, it won’t get done.

Just to be sure, I just checked, and I CAN Airplay from MacOS 15.3.1 to Era-100.

However I CANT AirPlay from Apple Music on Windows to Era-100.

This a somewhat condensed version of what I posted in this thread regarding this issue a month ago. All results remain the same excepting that MacOS Sequoia is now v15.3.1

Range Extenders can be problematic and yes they may affect one device and not another.  Also if you have a Mesh WiFi make sure that the satellites do not have DHCP rights to create/assign IP addresses.

  • Apple Music ver. 1.5.2.56
  • MacOS Sequoia 15.2
  • Mac Studio_M1
  • MacBook Pro 16 Inch_M2
  • MacBook Pro 14 Inch_M3
  • Mac Mini_M4

I removed Era 100’s as surrounds to a bedroom Sonos system which resulted in Era 100’s reverting to separate rooms (Sony 2 and Sony 3)

Using the Airplay speaker selection icon in Apple Music:

  • Airplay to each individual Era 100 as a stand-alone room by checking the individual box
  • Airplay to Era 100 simultaneously by checking the room box for each
  • Stopped Airplay to one Era 100 by unchecking the room box and leaving the other room box checked
  • Reversed #3 above

All tests successful 👍

Edit: You may need to contact Apple support for assistance as Airplay is their product….

Bottomline I’m having no issues with Airplay from my Mac’s

I have a Move 2 and experience the same issue. By chance did you change the name of your sonos speaker? My issue seems to have started when I did. It worked perfectly for about 6 months I change the name and then it would sometimes take forever to connect. Now it just does not connect. I can connect to my other Sonos speakers from the M3 MacBook Pro. And I can connect to the move 2 with my other apple devices. And even connect to the MacBooks and the move2 via airplay at the same time from my other apple devices. But the move 2 will not connect directly to the Mac.

Hey, I just came by to check for any news about the issue. Unfortunately not :-/

I still cannot airplay from my Macbook Pro M3 to the Era 100s (2, stereo setup).

I can airplay from the Macbook to other airplay enabled devices on my network.

I can airplay from my iPhone to the Era 100s.

Interestingly, if I’m airplaying something from my iPhone, and try to airplay from my Macbook, the iPhone stops airplaying. But then the “could not connect to <<device name>>“ error message appears.

@markus1983 , I’m curious as to what Sonos Support said, when you called in?

Out of curiosity, did it used to work and/or did you rename the speakers? I have the same problem with my Move 2. I can connected to it with my iPhone or iPad via AirPlay, but not the MacBook Pro M3. Used to work. I swapped names with another Sonos speaker and it stopped working. The other speakers with the swaped name works. I tried renaming the MOVE 2 something else entirely and nothing. I even went into the MacBook Pro OS’s airplay cache via command line and deleted it. Still doesn’t work via AirPlay.

Didnt call support.

Since it’s working for @GuitarSuperstar , I’m wondering why it isn’t for you. Based on that, I’m taking the assumption it may be a local issue. My own Era 100s are set up as surrounds, so I can’t do any AirPlay 2 tests of my own to them, although I only have an M1 Mac.

I can fathom a potential difference from a windows machine, but it doesn’t make any sense to me that it is working in one user, and not in another user’s same setup case. But I certainly don’t have access to the same hard data that Sonos support does.
