Sonos app on Mac

I’m getting a message on my MacBook that the Sonos app will soon need to be upgraded because support for apps built for the Intel processors are being phased out. I have Sonos app version 17.2 and MacOS 26.4.1. Is a newer version of the Sonos app available?

Prior to the upcoming MacOS release previous versions of MacOS used “Rosetta”

Here’s an AI Overview”

  • "Rosetta" most commonly refers to Apple's translation software enabling Intel-based apps to run on Apple silicon (M1/M2/M3 chips). It works by automatically translating code during installation, allowing for immediate, responsive performance. It is crucial for compatibility but will be phased out in future macOS versions.

Sonos has decided not to recode the MacOS app to work with Apple silicon. Sonos actually started stripping the desktop app of functionality (i.e. setup and others functions) from MacOS and Windows several years ago. Eventually, the desktop app will be phased out on Windows as well. The Web-Based app is the eventual replacement.

Well this answer is no longer needed now that Sonos has reversed course on making the Desktop App work natively with Apple Silicon. 😂😂😂

This is why I wrote MiSonos. Give it a shot and let me know if you need any help.

MiSonos is a free controller I wrote to run on my LAN. Works on a Mac (Intel is fine) and has a web interface as well as a PWA so you can run it on your phone.

It checks a lot of the boxes you guys are talking about and I'm happy to add more features on request. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Wow, I’m so disappointed. Their software has always been *****, but this is even worse. As least on my Mac I could get it to work. Anyone know of an alternative app for Sono’s? Their webapp has very little functionality.

Yes, there are various alternate apps that work natively on Apple Silicon.

Like many of your longtime customers I’m just learning from APPLE (not you) that Sonos has dropped support for the only useable UI for their flagship product.  The iOS app is useless for queue management, volume control, library search, playlist creation, room configuration or anything that you actually need a home audio system to do.
I’m astonished not just that Sonos continues to remove functionality that there customers love, but that they’ve again utterly failed to communicate with the customer what was coming and why.

Another self-inflicted crisis.

Sonos has been quite open about their plans for sunsetting the PC and Mac apps - Sonos might still step in and create a new version for Mac, though like others I do not expect this. The step to no longer allow older apps on newer Mac versions is an Apple decision though, so the fact you hear this from Apple does not seem strange to me.

You state: “The iOS app is useless for queue management, volume control, library search, playlist creation, room configuration or anything that you actually need a home audio system to do.”

Not a queue user myself, but I understand the Mac app can make a longer queue. As for the other statements - this should not be so bad on the iOS app. Have you contacted Sonos about this?

It’s beyond embarrassing for Sonos if they won’t keep the Mac app going, and at this point in technology history, completely indefensible: If your engineers can’t port this small codebase to native Mac Silicon, get a Claude Code account for $20/mo. and ask it to figure it out.

Your customers would like a Mac app. They have paid a premium for hardware that uses a Mac app. Keep the Mac app alive, please.

Is there an Apple Silicon version of the S1 MacOS app? The announcement is for S2.

The announcement was actually for both, but they called S2 “Modern” and S1 “Legacy”?.
