Why does sonos create an iTunes folder and an iTunes Music Library.xml file when I update the music library? For some reason it decides to create this folder and file even when I don’t have a path for my music folder set up. I also wonder where it gets the data to put in the xml file? It’s not my latest music library because newly imported cd’s aren’t in it, but it does create an xml file referencing to part of my library.

My music is stored on an USB drive connected to my iMac and Music/iTunes works fine. Sonos however does not. Even when I export my music library to xml and copy that file to the iTunes folder, Sonos doesn’t seem to use this new file because when I open the xml file the references to my latest imported CD’s are in there but they don’t show up in de Sonos library.

Hi @steentje

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

Sorry to hear of the trouble you are having with this file reappearing.

Until some time ago (years), iTunes (now called Apple Music) used to save all playlists to the xml file that you mention. Sonos used to read this file to import any iTunes playlists that you might want to access on your Sonos system.

When iTunes turned into Apple Music, they stopped using the xml file and stored the playlist details elsewhere instead - somewhere where the speakers could not access it. As a result, the Sonos Desktop apps started pulling the playlist info from wherever it is stored now and putting it in the xml file that iTunes used to create, so that the speakers can then access it to read. This prevents you from having to perform a manual export of your playlists prior to re-indexing your Music Library within Sonos.

So, if this xml file is repeatedly showing up for you, it is because the Sonos app will be reading the Apple Music app’s playlist info and creating the file from that. To prevent this from happening, I presume you would just need to uninstall Apple Music/iTunes from your computer - you say that it is not referencing your actual music where it is stored, so I presume you do not need the app.

I would have to assume that when you export your playlists from iTunes, they do not show up in you Sonos app because iTunes has no idea where you are storing your music (according to your own statement), so you can’t be getting the right results.

I recommend setting iTunes to access your music library where it actually resides, and to perhaps export your playlists as separate files (.m3u files, perhaps).

Please also note that you would need to manually re-index your music library after exporting playlists - it’s only during the indexing that the xml file is read.

I assume you are able to play files from your Music Library on Sonos? - if not, I’d recommend troubleshooting that issue first.

Honestly, I recommend you get in touch with our technical support team who have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your Sonos system and what it reports - the team will be able to remotely connect to your computer in order to set all this up for you.

I hope this helps.
