For several months my speakers have been unusable.

The android app crashes immediately on loading and has been updated multiple times. I no longer use this. At this stage I would just like to be able to play something on my speakers with the desktop app.

The desktop app has virtually no options available and notifies me I need to update. It does seem to “see” the speaker but I can’t control it in any way. When I try this I always get the error 1101.

I have turned off all of my 7 speakers except one play 1 which is cabled into my router. My laptop is also connected by cable to the router. It runs Windows 10.

I have tried everything I can think of and everything I have seen on these forums. Multiple power off and on and ensured no firewall or other wifi settings are blocking the sonos application. It seems the application can never connect to the sonos server to perform the update. I think all my network settings are otherwise correct. Have experimented with band steering on and off, DNS settings and multiple other settings but nothing seems to fix this. Everything else related to the network runs well on the laptop.

I haven’t done any factory reset of the speaker/s.

Should I do this? Does anybody have any other suggestions to try to get the Windows desktop app to be able to update?

Thank you for any help.

Daniel

It is necessary for all speakers in a system, and all apps connecting to it, to be at a compatible hardware/software revision. Try deleting and then reinstalling the Android app, then power up all your speakers and update them all. Then check for updates on the apps.

Thank you for your reply.

I have done this. I deleted the android app and installed a fresh version. This app crashes as soon as I press any button on the “Get started with setup” screen. I can never get past this screen.

It doesn’t seem to matter if I have all speakers on or only one connected and turned on.

I have also deleted the desktop app and re-installed it. All speakers were powered up again. Desktop app still has all functions greyed out and any request to update always returns the error 1101. I have tried to re-install the app as well with only one speaker powered on but I always get this same error.

I may next try to install an old apk of the android app and see if that will somehow allow me to connect and update, but welcome any other suggestions.

Thanks again.

According to the Sonos support site, there are a number of things you can try to resolve the 1101 error issue. Basically something is preventing your speakers from reaching the Sonos update servers.

Have a look at this page for what is recommended:

https://support.sonos.com/en-us/article/error-1101-when-updating-sonos

I would suggest the first step. Power off everything and wait about 5 minutes. This includes your phone.

Then starting with your router/network, power it up and allow it to fully boot.
Then one by one, power on all your speakers and allow them to fully boot each time.

Then your phone and try to connect to your system.

Hopefully you are able to run the update you need from your phone or laptop. If the updates are still unsuccessful, give Sonos support a call. They can probably push the updates to your speakers.

Have you followed the guidance here: https://support.sonos.com/en-us/article/error-1101-when-updating-sonos ?

Have you tried Sonos support?

@dthew I think you need to talk to Sonos Support. I have, and still have, issues with the new App and Firmware but my Sonos system has never been unusable in the strictest definition of that word. Unreliable, unstable, unresponsive, yes but completely unusable, no.

Thanks again,

I have done all of that mutliple times, but to be sure I have just followed all of that advice meticulously again and still have the same issue.

Desktop app giving the same error 1101 and not allowing any functions.

Android app freezing and crashing straight after opening every time.

There must be something related to my network that is not allowing it to connect to the sonos server. For the life of me I can’t work this out.

Seems that I need to contact sonos support so will try to call them when I can find the time. Please let me know if anyone thinks of anything else I could try in the meantime.

When you reinstall the phone app make sure that you delete, and then reboot your phone before reinstalling the app.

I have done this again, with a couple of different android phones.

Still can’t seem to see any speakers or perform any update. The app freezes and crashes on opening. After repeated tries it eventually tells me I need to update. This update always encounters an error and then I am stuck on the update screen with no other way to use the app.

This screen does seem to let me submit a diagnostic so I will do this and contact Sonos support when I am able.

Still open to any other ideas...

Try hardwiring your Playbar or a speaker that is not a surround speaker to your network.

If that does not work, I suggest you do what others have suggested:

Call Support and chat with them.
