The windows app, for all practical purposes, hasn’t been touched since they ‘retired’ it, other than bug fixes. If you’re doing any management tasks, basically anything other that music playback, you’re better off using either the mobile controller, or possibly the new ‘web’ app, which I haven’t tried.

I’d be curious as to a screenshot of the ‘update’ screen you get. There is certainly a difference between an update to S1, and an upgrade to S2. For your use case, it might be easier to just delete your Windows controller from your Windows PC, and just download a fresh version from Sonos. I’d use the mobile devices you have to check to ensure the speakers are up to date, which the fresh download of the S1 controller from the Sonos website will be expecting.

Your S1 app is out of date (it still get occasional updates), click Update and you’ll get the latest S1 app and the disabled features will work again.
