Shared music library on S2 app

I have an existing system, using S1 app, and have successfully set up a music library, which is a usb stick plugged into my router (this is a BT Smart Hub 2 for any UK based users reading this). I have added an Era 300, on the S2 app of course, however using the same path for the music library, it says it’s not recognised on the S2 app. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any support and guidance with this.

You need what is known as SMB2/3 for Sonos S2, the Router only works with SMB1 which is why your S1 system works but the S2 does not.

Thank you for your response @Belly M - apart from getting a new router that is SMB2/3 compatible, any ideas how it could work with existing BT router? Thank you.

You won’t get the BT Router working with S2 directly, there are solutions using a gateway device (Raspberry Pi) but that involves a bit a technical knowledge, time, patience and money.

A new Router  (unless you are using BTs digital voice as you will be stuck with BT hardware) or a NAS is really the solution but you have make sure all versions of SMB are available. I suppose you could continue to use the BT Router for your S1 system and get a cheap NAS for S2 and just make a copy of your music?

Thanks for your prompt reply. Yes, I was coming to conclusion that a NAS is way forward, I was just looking for the lowest cost option :-). I am planning on going to S2 for my whole system, when I’m brave enough and I’m convinced Sonos have finally got things to where they should be with the S2 app. So when you say it needs to work with all version of SMB, you mean it has to work with 1 to be compatible with S1?

Yes to work with Sonos S1 you need SMB version 1.

SMB 1 has been dropped by quite a few companies now so buying a new NAS with SMB 1 support  could be tricky.

I have a similar issue - BT router but with an old Apple Airport NAS - and now no access to the music library with S2. I’m worried that if I get a new NAS that has SMBV2, my BT router (only SMBV1) will still block SONOS access to the music library. Does anyone know if this will work if I get a brand new SMBV2 NAS drive, given that I’m using the music library over LAN? Does the BT Router’s SMBV1 get in the way of a LAN connection to a NAS?

Whilst the Router does have a significant bearing on your network its SMB version (for file sharing)is not something to worry about when purchasing a NAS.

Synology NAS devices still allow you to configure SMB 1,2 and 3 and are quite easy to find and buy. I believe the same is also true for QNAP.
