S1 App won't recognize connection to temporary "SONOS" network

Hi everyone,

I recently moved and I'm trying to set up my Play:5 (Gen 1) on my new Wifi network using the S1 app. It was working perfectly fine a few weeks ago at my old place, but I'm currently stuck in a setup loop.

When I start the wireless setup process, the S1 app correctly identifies the Play:5 and proceeds to create the temporary "SONOS" network. I go into my iPhone settings, connect to the "SONOS" network, and confirm I'm connected (the Wi-Fi icon is showing in the top right of my screen).

However, when I return to the S1 app, it throws an error telling me I am not connected to the "SONOS" network.

Here is what I have already tried to fix it:

  • Factory reset the speaker

  • Deleted, reinstalled, and updated the S1 app to the latest version

  • Tried using a different iPhone

  • Ignored my regular home Wi-Fi network on my phone so it wouldn't auto-reconnect

  • Turned off the "Private Wi-Fi Address" setting in my iPhone's Wi-Fi network settings

  • Verified that "Local Network" access is toggled ON for the Sonos S1 app in my iPhone settings

Are there any other tricks to get the app to recognize the connection? Or is my only option at this point to buy an Ethernet cable, and try the wired setup?

I appreciate any advice! :)

Never seen this issue before, but I haven’t used S1 in quite a while. I’d be tempted to go to the local store and get the temporary (short) internet cable. Unfortunately, you’ve reset the device, which means you could no longer set your new router to the same SSID and password  as your old router.

Alternately, you could call Sonos Support to discuss it. I’d certainly be interested in what they say.

When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.

Is this your only SONOS product? If so, don’t attempt to use SonosNet because at least one SonosNet compatible product must be wired to the network before SonosNet will start. Was your PLAY:5 firmware up to date? Probably the easiest path is to temporarily wire the unit to the network, but you could try to set up a new system. “Add” to the system cannot work. Because of the Factory Reset no “system”currently exists.

For anyone else who is moving a system to or installing a new network, avoid Factory Reset because it complicates the process. All of the SONOS Playlists and music service registrations will be lost during the Factory Reset. You’ll also need to setup access to a local library, if any. The easiest plan is to duplicate the former WiFi credentials.

Heavens, I hadn’t considered if there was a BRIDGE involved, and SonosNet, if that’s the case, I’d absolutely recommend retiring the BRIDGE, and at least temporarily wire the PLAY:5 instead. Then, I’d, after setup, try hanging the device off of WiFi, rather than SonosNet.
