I’ve updated SONOS on my Android phone. The new app is awful compared to the old one and has so many bugs, as noted by customers on this site minute-by-minute over the past week or so.

I’ve also updated my SONOS app on my Windows 11 computer. This is where I have my music library. The update removed the library. I tried to re-add it, and it came up with Error 913. I can’t access the music library…..I can’t use SONOS for what I bought it for!!!! Frustrated doesn’t go anywhere near how I feel right now. I’m not an I.T. Test Analyst. Neither have I volunteered to be a BETA tester for SONOS. But my investment in SONOS equipment has been destroyed by this update. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

I’ve been at this for over an hour and have had not joy.

To recap:

  • No check marks in SMB options listed in the Windows Features tab(s)
  • I created a “share” for the music file. This file ended up in my Network tab.
    • I gave permission to all my users as well as Sonos
  • When in the Sonos app I go to look to add the file, the Network folder will not open thru Sonos.
  • Tried moving music folder to other locations when it will open while using Sonos Music Library tab.
  • I continue to get the 913 error message.
  • I have rebooted laptop serveral times.

HP Laptop running Win11 (all current updates installed)

Music files stored on the above HP Laptop wireless connection to Sonos Port then thru Yamaha Pre-Amp and Onkyo receiver with OSD sub-woffer. Buildit in ceiling and wall speakers. All equip newish (2+ years old).

Help!!

Thank you so much Sunocoz!!  I right-clicked my iTunes folder in windows explorer, went to properties, shared that folder with the Sonos system, then pretended the shared folder link is an NAS drive and tried adding it back to Sonos using the Networked device option like you suggested.  It worked and the music library reappeared on all our devices, both versions of the iOS mobile app and on the desktop.  Still can’t queue on the new app but at least we can play our library for now anyway.  You are brilliant!

The networking trick seems to work. But you have to be kidding me. Did they test this on even one computer that didn’t belong to the developer who wrote this crap code? Amateurville.

Sonos is a company worth more than 2 billion USD, and then it delivers such a poorly made app with so much pooha. This new app totally stinks. It’s a total betrayal.
Playing songs from our libraries is a very basic function, and it is the main reason why I bought and liked Sonos speakers. I found it very disappointing when Sonos removed the possibility to play songs stored on our devices, but now they really messed it up. Forcing an update to an app that doesn’t provide access to our libraries??? It’s a good reason to look for alternatives.
What are your best suggestions for better devices with more honest support?

I am so frustrated. Also just updated and now cannot access any of my imported playlists. Just waited on the phone for over an hour to speak to someone. The line that they are spinning now is that this added feature has been delayed and will be added soon. So basically we are unable to import music at the moment, but this feature will be added back again soon. He said they do not have an exact date yet.  He made it sound like they are deliberately delaying certain features during the rollout of the new app. When obviously it’s actually a co*k up that they are obviously frantically trying to fix. I am on a Mac. If anyone can let me know how to get my Apple Music library to play in Sonos again for the meantime I’m all ears. Arrgh, hope this gets sorted soon. The new app on my phone looks dreadful too. You can’t find anything. It all worked so perfectly before!

Here is the solution for Windows for the local library error bug with code (913), read the image from left to right.

Happened to me to - both the mobile app and the Windows App absolute crap. My system keeps losing connection to the surround speakers as well. Factory reset system 3 times since the  “new experience” update. Worst thing - Sonos don’t give a toss - they’ve got your money already, who cares if you get a shonky experience afterwards.

Thank God for my iPad! When I experienced the debacle with with new horrible app on my phone, I elected to NOT update the app on my iPad, so I can still access my 200+GB music library on my NAS drive. My Windows desktop apps, and my phone are bricked. This is a truly lousy situation.

Greatest of gratiitude to NK32. It worked perfectly. Although the language in the images is in French, the images format is exactly the same as in the English version. Just follow the red markings. You can copy the image to your desktop, open it, and use your zoom facility to enlarge it. Blessings 😄.

After reading the various ways to fix this, I stumbled on a way to do it (Windows 11) that is fairly easy, and I have been able to successfully repeat it 3-4 with different folders I have on my desktop system.

Here are the steps that worked for me.

  1. First, In the main Windows Explorer, find the folder you want to share and right click on it.
  2. Choose Properties, and then the Sharing tab. Once there, I next click the regular (not advanced) Sharing button.
  3. I get a window that says, “Choose people to share with.”
  4. There is an empty choice box with a triangle on the right side. Open that by clicking on the little triangle.
  5. One choice is “Sonos Wireless HiFi System” (in addition to my own account names I have). I choose that one.
  6. Then click Add (very important - when I forgot to do this, it did not work when I tried to add it in the Sonos app.)
  7. Finally, click Share at the bottom of the box.
  8. Now go to the Windows Sonos app. Under the Manage menu app, choose Music Library settings. There are 3 choices on the left. Select Music Library.
  9. There is an Add button to choose the folder you want to share. Navigate to it and click on it. When I correctly did all of the earlier steps here, it does add the folder to the Sonos Music  Library. Depending on how big this folder is, the music library will now added and indexed. While I was typing this message, it indexed a fairly large music folder I have on a separate fairly large internal hard drive.

This method does not require tricking the machine into thinking you are using a NAS, and I did not have to go into ResEdit to make it work. The only thing I am not exactly sure of here is why the Sonos Wireless HiFi System was available as a “user” to share. Maybe it simply happened because I had installed the Sonos app, but this is the part of the process I cannot say for certain.

But now I can listen to anything from my computer through my Sonos system.

I’ve fixed mine after talking to support, but this is not something for the average user.  I hope there’s an easier way, as I found it a bit of a chore, and I work on computers all day.  Here’s how I did it in windows 11..

  1. Make sure SMBv1 is disabled by doing the following:
  2. Launch the Control Panel by typing Control Panel in the Windows search box.
  3.  Click Programs in the list and then select Turn Windows features on or off under Programs and Features.
  4.  Ensure there is no checkmark in the box next to both SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support and SMB 1.0/CIFS Server.
  5. If you had to disable it, it may require a reboot after you deselect, and hit OK.  Mine fortunately wasn’t selected.
  6. Create a share on the folder that your music is in, and give a user permission to use it.
  7. I created a local user using instructions from here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/windows/create-a-local-user-or-administrator-account-in-windows-20de74e0-ac7f-3502-a866-32915af2a34d   But apparently you can use the user you’re logged in as (I couldn’t, it didn’t work for me).
  8. With a user ready, right click the folder containing music and select Properties
  9. Select the Sharing Tab
  10. Hit the Share button, and make sure the user you want to use is in the list with at least Read access, and hit the Share button.
  11. Back on the sharing tab, it will show the name of the share as \\<computer name>\Music      (or whatever the share name is (mine was called TheLibrary))  Hit Apply.
  12. This share name is what you type in the sonos app when you are adding your music library.
  13. fin

What a nightmare.

It works for me too. Not so difficult.

Thanks a lot.

I followed these instructions and was able to add the path to my music library, but when I click on any of the sub folders in the desktop app (artist, album, genre, etc) the music files do not show. the only message is No selections are available. I did a library refresh and still nothing. Any recommendations? thanks.

Sorry to say I have the same problem, and have had THE most patronising letter back when I wrote to Sonos’ CEO. Blah blah “do our best for the customer” blah blah. Last month I had a working system to play the music on my NAS; now I have a doorstop.

Does this work with NAS drives too? Only I don’t have a “Sharing” tab when I R-click my Music folder (running Wondows 11 btw)

Same here. No access to music library. I'm pissed. F@#k you very much Sonos! Fix this!

Here is the fix for a PC. It takes two minutes:

  1. Find a music folder that you want to “share” with SONOS (i.e. navigate to the folder on the PC).
  2. Right click on the folder
  3. Select “Properties” from menu
  4. Select “Sharing” tab
  5. Click “Share...” button (opens “Network Access” window)
  6. Select your SONOS system from the pulldown menu in the center of the window.
  7. Click “Share” button at the bottom of the “Network Access” window
  8. It took SONOS 10 minutes to add my library of 10K+ songs

Tried dsrtsng method for fixing this cluster.

It DID NOT work for me. 0 for ever in trying to apply these solutions.

HP laptop, Win11, Macfee security. Music files are stored on an external Seagate HD.

Changed USB port location for the Seagate and than made no difference.

Any/all ideas and suggestions/modifications would be greatly appreciated. Having a dinner party tomorrow PM and have no tunes is a buzz kill.

I just need to add my disappointment here to all of you.

How can someone release and update without thorough testing? How can I play my own music? I see people doing some tricks trying to make it work but this should not be the case. It cannot be.
It’s terrible that both of the apps, PC and the mobile are full of bugs. The mobile is almost useless. I get all greyed out icons 9 out of 10 times. I can’t play anything. Only when I start from the PC I can change the volume and then play another station that decides to be not greyed out.

I’m glad I got only a streamer. I’ve had it for a decade. I’ll be looking for something else. That’s for sure.

I discovered this same method myself and it seems to be working. My music library is downloading now. I did also have to remember my username and password for the computer which I never use since I use the facial recognition to log in.

I can now confirm this did work for me. One  additional detail:

At stet 3-5 above, Sonos hifi was not listed, but I simply typed “Sonos” and it found it.

Thank you, thank you thank you to dstsng  (Lyricist I  1 reply   20 hours ago ) That worked for me. I had been on the chat to SONOS twice earlier today both times for more than an hour. One a US person the 2nd in Australia. Neither gave anything that worked. Several of the methods discussed here were attempted and none worked. This worked!!! Thank you. I have windows 11, the SMB 1 was not on my computer, it had SMB2 as required. Also I had checked the permission for SONOS for the folder - but the advanced share as discussed in other posts. This much simpler method worked. No need for an extra local account etc etc etc. SONOS themselves have no clue what to do.

Sorry, I spoke too soon. It has gone again. The music library now is shown...but Sonos can no longer access it….

Yes, it almost worked. It found this ‘Sonos’ user but can’t add the music folder. Still, it’s a great find on your part guys but this is not how a reputable software should work. You are indeed helping angry people start enjoying their music again, but at the same time you are camouflaging the negligence of the company that has a large group of paid developers to do the job properly. Wait…….or maybe they are not being paid and that’s why we have this problem LOL
In other words, you are kind of diverting the legitimate anger away from Sonos.

It would be nice if Sonos actually did something about it. So far, they pretend that nothing happened. At least I haven’t seen anything.

My apologies for being part of the problem rather than the solution!

Here is the fix for a PC. It takes two minutes:

  1. Find a music folder that you want to “share” with SONOS (i.e. navigate to the folder on the PC).
  2. Right click on the folder
  3. Select “Properties” from menu
  4. Select “Sharing” tab
  5. Click “Share...” button (opens “Network Access” window)
  6. Select your SONOS system from the pulldown menu in the center of the window.
  7. Click “Share” button at the bottom of the “Network Access” window
  8. It took SONOS 10 minutes to add my library of 10K+ songs

It might work for your particular configuration. I got through these steps also but the final one is the one that counts and there I get the middle finger. Why? Because for some stupid reason Sonos is trying to access that location using the forward slash notation (see the screenshot) while it should be a back slash. At this point, I didn’t enter this information. Sonos did by itself.

Only when entered manually with \\, it worked.

But like I said earlier, having you guys here trying to find the solutions, you are not really helping in getting Sonos taking the responsibility for this cluster f&%^$ up and doing something about it.

I’m so angry!

Roll it back you morons (Sonos). Don’t say ‘should be fixed within a month’.
