new app update locks out iphone x users on ios 16

I went to add a new speaker to my Sonos app today, this tells me I need to update the app
The new app update on iOS is only available to iOS 17 and above which my iPhone X doesn't support

I just bought an era100 and cannot add it to the app because the app is forcing an update to allow me to add a speaker - the not now button simply cancels the add speaker option.

this is absolute bull, so now Sonos require me to get a new phone to add a speaker to their app?

im sure I'm not the only person affected but probably one of the first since most won't notice in day to day use right now, but this is bull

First of all, congratulations! It’s not common to see a phone 8 years old and still kicking.

if you’re not thinking to renew the iPhone, and you don’t have another mobile or tablet at home, perhaps borrow one from a friend, get it into your WiFi, install the last update of the Sonos app, log in, and add the speaker. I think, after that, your app in the X should already recognise the speaker.

I’m not sure how long ago the iPhone X came out, but how long do you feel old technology should be supported?

In sorry you feel like this is Sonos’ fault. Your iPhone is 8 years old this month. While that dosent seem like old hardware to some, older devices simply have a harder time with new operating systems that require more robust hardware.

Bite the bullet and purchase at least a iPhone 14. I can only imagine how slow your phone operates, not to mention battery life must be really short.

Maybe everyone can afford a new phone every year but personally unless it's struggling with the apps I load on or the phone itself feels like it just can't keep up I've not needed to upgrade it, certainly this is the first app I have come across that has dropped support for my handset, aside from the fact I look after my tech and the phone is still going strong.

Sonos should at least advise customers ahead of time when they are going to drop support for something like this? Isn't that what most companies do? That's my point, just a simple marketing email, hey customers we are moving in from older models of handset support, make sure your aware of what's coming..

Had I known that my iPhone was just about to be made obsolete as far as Sonos was concerned it would have made me think twice about buying another Sonos product as up until a couple of days ago (when I last used it) the app was working perfect

But got to love the responses here, shouldn't be surprised given its a premium product, but honestly thanks to the one person who suggested to borrow someone's phone to add it to my system, that worked so thanks, because my Sonos app on my iPhone X now lets me do everything else with the new speaker I added and without updating

They did, in the announcements section. If I remember correctly I’ve also got an e-mail (check your junk files).

Glad to know it worked and I could help you!
