Hello,

I’ve read through many posts on this topic but surprisingly haven’t found any answers to my specific questions. I have a Windows 11 desktop computer with an iTunes library of ~40,000 songs - all ripped from my CDs.

Here are some key locations/paths in my system:
Windows Music folder: C:\Users\deanm\Music
Location of iTunes Music Database: C:\Users\deanm\Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl
Location of iTunes XML: C:\Users\deanm\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml
Location of actual music files: M:\Music (this is a second HDD on my desktop computer)

When setting up the Sonos controller app in Windows, I’m asked to add my music folders on Sonos. Which of the above locations should I add, so that I get my music and my imported iTunes playlists? Would it be the location of my actual music files (M:\Music), the location of my Windows Music folder or the path to my iTunes files?

Please be specific as I’m new to Sonos.

Thanks,
Dean

Hi @M0J0, the Windows desktop app is misleading as described here …

You can use the directory C:\Users\deanm\Music as described here …

If your music files are on the M: drive and your ‘iTunes Music Library.xml’ file is on your C: drive, then Sonos cannot import your playlists.  You need to change the location of your ‘iTunes Music Library.xml’ to the M: drive.  Copy ‘iTunes Music Library.xml’ from its current location to the M:\Music folder.  Close out iTunes and restart it while holding down the Shift key.  Set the *iTunes music folder location* in the dialog to M:\Music.

I’ll just throw my 2cents in here.  I’m on Mac, not PC, but it shouldn’t make any difference in this case since you’re pointing SONOS to shared directories.

In my case, my music files (.MP3s) are all stored on an external USB drive.  All music organization is done thru Apple’s MUSIC App (formerly iTunes, henceforth referred to as iTunes).

Apple’s MUSIC App (iTunes) no longer uses the iTunes Library.xml file, but it does still generate it - Why, when, I have no idea, but I seem to have a new one at least once a week.  It still resides in the old iTunes USER/MUSIC/ITUNES folder.

SO…..

If your music is stored on a different drive or directory than where iTunes defaults, when adding your music to SONOS, specify the directory for the stored music files.  Let it index those files.

Then, in order for SONOS to get your iTunes PLAYLISTS, add ANOTHER Music Library to SONOS, specifying the default iTunes .xml file path, ie: HOST/HD/USER/MUSIC.  I think SONOS automatically assumes an ITUNES subdirectory in MUSIC in order to locate the iTunes Library.xml file.
