Group /volume screen disappears on scroll

From the "Now playing" screen, when you touch at the bottom, the speakers playing in the group show first followed by speakers that are not playing. If you slide finger up to see the speakers lower in the list everything is fine. If you slide down to head towards the top of the list, the entire screen disappears and reveals whatever screen was behind it. To get back to that point where you can adjust the volume, you have to go through several taps. 

 

This behavior can be very frustrating because sometimes it will scroll while other times, it will slide away . There is an "Apply" button at the bottom of the volume adjustment screen so in my opinion, we should be required to hit the "Apply" button when we are done and the screen should not disappear when we are simply trying to scroll back up to the top.

 

Is there a way to mandate hitting the "Apply" button when you are done and otherwise keeping the screen there regardless of how you scroll?

I’ve reread your post five times, and I’m still not certain I understand the issue. I also wonder, since I’m not sure I’ve ever run in to this issue (if I comprehend it properly), I’m wondering which device you’re using the Sonos controller on, which controller you’re using, and if it’s possible to make a short ‘movie’ of the issue, then call Sonos Support to discuss it.

In answer to your direct question, I’d think changing something to a ‘mandate’ is possible, I’m just not sure whether or not it makes sense to the UI designer and engineer…or, since I don’t understand the issue, really whether or not the code currently allows such a change.

It is the correct behaviour. You just need to ensure you work this area at the bottom of the screen properly. 

Slide it up and you’ll get the list of all your speakers. Tap the speaker you want to be the live current one on which to control playback and music. It will then drop back to the bottom. (When scrolling up and down to pick a speaker, don’t get too close to the horizontal line at the top as that is used just to slide the list of speakers away.)

Tap it (don’t tap the icons) and it brings up the Now Playing screen in full so you can control playback and see more detail.

Tap the speaker icon (showing one speaker in front of another) and it brings up the grouping screen, allowing you to play on multiple speakers at the same time by ticking the speakers you want to use and pressing Apply. Equally you can untick them and press Apply to remove speakers. 

I think you just need to play with each option a few times to get used to understanding what process does what.

Rhonny: Sorry I did not make myself clear. You are referring to the Systems Screen where you select a speaker or group to control, but I was speaking of the Grouping screen where all speakers show with the ones in the group at the top and those not in the group at the bottom. 

Airgetlam… here’s the sequence:

Touching the Now Playing screen at the bottom (DR/LR, Family room,...) reveals the Grouping screen:

If you “slide finger up” (to scroll down) here, all is well but even if you scroll to the bottom of a long list of speakers (I have a 31 unit system) sliding finger down (to scroll back up) may slide the screen away instead of scrolling back up. The behavior is unpredictable. 

When this happens, it takes several touches to get back to the Grouping screen. It would be far more predictable if the Grouping screen only went away when “Apply” was pressed. This would yield a smoother flow of: Now playing » tap to add speakers/adjust volume » tap Apply to finish and return to Now Playing.

@Daytona Jim - I can understand the frustration here. The problem with the UI is that a Swipe Down (to scroll back up) can take you back to the previous screen or even the Sonos Home Screen (depending on which screen you are on at the time).

The UI is not intuitive. In the days of touchscreens, a swipe up/down is associated with scrolling up/down, with a specific action normally intended to navigate elsewhere, not a further swipe down.

In your case, for the Group/volume screen, if you ever start the Swipe Down motion from a position of the Saved Groups or above, you will be directed back to the previous screen.

If you start the Swipe Down motion from anywhere amongst the speaker/rooms list, then it should successfully scroll back to the top of the list, however, once you have reached the top, maybe without realising, a further Swipe Down motion will again take you to the previous screen.

That is possibly why you find the behaviour unpredictable because the same action can result in different outcomes.

Thanks for the response and input.  I understand what you’re saying but let me elaborate a bit to be sure I’m clear on what’s happening.

This is not a matter of sliding finger down (to scroll up) while I’m at the top of the list. Yes, the Grouping screen will always slide away if you do that, though I still maintain that it shouldn’t slide away because that means it behaves differently depending on where you are in the list. 

My issue deals with a long list in the Grouping screen. I have a 31-unit system so when I’m at the bottom of the Grouping screen, the top is far out of sight. If I finger down (to scroll up), sometimes the Grouping screen slides away and sometime it scrolls up. My finger’s starting point is nowhere near the top and it doesn’t depend upon where in the middle of the screen I start the touch-and-slide. 

My request is to have the Grouping screen persist until “Apply” is touched. That would eliminate this chronic aggravation by homogenizing the behavior.

@Daytona Jim Yes, got it. But I can’t replicate it as I don’t have enough speakers to go beyond one screen…

Maybe someone else can try to replicate it. (Maybe one of the mods can try - but no-one tells them what to do!)

Actually the UI/UE is different between Android and iOS apps.

My above comment was based on the iOS app.

Just tried using the Android app and it is fairly unpredictable what outcome you will get when attempting to scroll back up the list.
