As of a couple days ago I can no longer connect to PLEX.   I get
“Something went wrong. Try Again” when click on artists from my favorites
and

“No content items available” when clicking on Plex icon

I can cast to my sonos speakers from the Plex app (not plexamp) on my computer.

If gone through all the suggested steps I could find from the internet.  I guess my question is to see if anyone else is experiencing it or if it's just me (and for how long).  If its everyone, then hopefully its (another) screw up and they’ll get around to fixing it eventually.

super frustrating that something that has worked for years just stopped working especially when its the reason I went with Sonos.

Same problem. Nothing seems to help.

There was a firmware update this week that has to be initiated by the user. If you have not updated, I would suggest starting there.

There is also no need to use the plex server. You just need to point Sonos to the local library in order to play your files.

First off - thanks for replying.

ill look into the firmware today - thanks!
as for plex - I’ve put so much work into the curation (artwork, metadata, etc…) I’m hoping I can preserve all that.

FIRMWARE UPDATE WORKED!
THANK YOU!

You’re welcome!

Sonos & Plex updates and firmwares didnt solve this prolblem. Cant search songs from Plex to Sonos.

aaaand I’m back - “Couldn’t Play “xxxxx”. Couldn’t connect to Plex. error for everything

I’ve made sure sonos firmware is up to date and plex server is up to date

removed Plex as a service and re-added and re-authorized it.  It is able to show my plex library, but same error every time.

other services work just fine

anyone else having issues?

Did we ever find a solution to this problem?

Nope - of course not.  What a joke.

Hi @dcass

Welcome to the Sonos Community!

I too have had an issue with playing or accessing Plex from my Sonos system, but it is not the fault of Sonos - after a change of ISP (Internet Service Provider), my new provider utilises CGNAT (technical, but a way for multiple users to use a single public IP address, or switch between a pool of them, anyway) which Plex explicitly state in their support pages that they do not support. To bypass this issue (if indeed your ISP does utilise CGNAT - please search for whether they do or not), I believe you would need to pay extra for a static public IP address (which, to be clear, comes with it’s own security concerns).

Personally, I can get Plex playing on my Sonos system if I disable and then re-enable Remote Access in my Plex server’s settings, and re-authorise Plex in the Sonos app all within the space of a couple of minutes. I will be once again unable to play once my ISP switches my public IP for another, which may only take them several minutes. If you can replicate this behaviour, then it is likely that you are hitting the same restriction as I am. I do recommend you ask your ISP (or Google it) if they use CGNAT.

As a workaround, I can only repeat what @Pools-3015 suggested - point Sonos to the folder where Plex is also pointed and play using Music Library rather than the Plex service (only really suitable if you have less than ~65K songs).

I hope this helps.

Using Music Library is only an option if you are local to your music share. Plex provides remote access and is invaluable if you have Sonos systems in multiple locations. This used to work fine but is now unusable. Browsing Plex library works intermittently but playing any content always fails with dropped connections.

I should also point out that Plexamp app works remotely so it does appear to be an issue with Sonos app. My current workaround for Sonos Move in remote location is to just connect with bluetooth and use Plexamp on my phone.

I would love to see this issue get some attention.

Hi @faso

You may find better luck with a service such as ibroadcast.com - they let you upload your own music and stream it for free. You can add the same account to multiple Sonos systems, and none of them will rely on local conditions at another location. YouTube Music will allow the same.

I hope this helps.

It’s disappointing that the upshot appears to be “Plex playback no longer works with Sonos”.Search? Sure, we’ll let you do that. Load all the tracks into the queue? Yeah, why not. Actually play anything? Nah, forget it.

Is there actually a good, working alternative? I only ever signed up to Plex because I very quickly hit the 65k music library limit when I started ripping my CDs. All the suggestions I’ve seen so far involve streaming from a separate device (phone, PC, etc). At that point, I could stream to any smart speaker and no longer have to keep swearing at the still not completely fixed Sonos app.

Did you try streaming to Sonos from Plexamp?

Did you try streaming to Sonos from Plexamp?

The whole point of using Plex is that it is meant to be integrated into the Sonos app. Literally the only reason I bought Plex. I love my wife, But she is not… mmm… very technical. Two apps to do a thing? Not a chance. She finds all the changes and unreliability of the Sonos app itself hard enough to deal with. 🤣

Not sure if it was today’s Sonos update or the Plex server update or my tinkering but 🤞Plex now works with Sonos again. Yay. I’d still prefer some way to just expand the local library to infinite size but Sonos users can’t be choosers.

Plex amp app drop on playback or only plays one song to my Sonos devices. 😞 anyone figure out how to fix this?

Samsung s21+ Phone, Plexamp, Sonos Move

Is this the problem that others are facing:

I can stream music, stored on my PC, to my phone via Plexamp.

I can (in most instances) view my music library through the Sonos app and stream it to my Sonos Move speakers. Sometimes I have to refresh the Plex option in Sonos.

I can no longer stream my music to my Sonos Move Speakers using the Plexamp app. When I’m in the Plexamp app, I can stream music to my phone. When I select the casting symbol, the Plexamp app “finds” the Sonos Move option. When I select that, the play > icon whirls and then stops. Or, alternatively, I get the dreaded “Could not switch to player”!!!

I thought the issue may have something to do with my phone being on 5Ghz and Sonos being on 2.4Ghz (???) but after turning off 5Ghz on the router, no change

Do we have a solution? Or is it Plex’s problem?

I have exact same issue but using iOS to ERA100 pair. Have never got it to work. Resorted to airplay from Plexamp. Plexamp uses airplay 1 so is lossless over airplay.

I have the same situation that just started today after accidentally updating the new plex on my iphone. The music library is no longer available to view in Plex on ios, only through plexamp which Sonos does not show as a service available to add.

Same problem here. After Sonos loosing the ability to search local libraries, which is absurd. I had to look for another solution, and Plex solved that problem, until it stopped working recently. Everything is up to date here, Plex remote access works, I can search the Plex library, but nothing plays.

Same problem here.  Sonos does show the album art when I switch to Plex but when I go to play a tune it fails.  When I select shuffle it tries to play four tunes, failing each time.

Sonos/Plex worked fine for several years, and then it started to be less reliable.  I would have to press play several times to get it to work.  Usually, it became less reliable with a software update where they added more features to Sonos.  It was as if they were overloading the system with new features and playing Plex became more unreliable with each update until it stopped working altogether.

My library is too big to play directly in Sonos, which is the reason I moved to Plex.

When I called Sonos they had me try several things and when the computer script stopped giving things to try they told me it was a Plex problem and they couldn’t help me anymore.  The person I was talking to had no clue about Plex.

Like many users, the Sonos Music Library is a non-starter for me because of its limits. I gave it up a decade ago. Plex was a great solution to this problem -- until the 2024 Sonos app re-design ruined it (and many other things).

Now I have a problem that seems to be the opposite of most people here: I can access Plex through Sonos with no trouble, and if I search for an artist or album and then drag and drop it into the Sonos queue, it plays perfectly. What I CANNOT do is browse my library. For example, I search for Miles Davis under “artist’ and Plex tells me there are 42 albums. I click on that search result and the infamous “unable to browse music” appears. So if you know precisely which album you want to hear, everything is dandy. If you want to browse an artist, or even browse the whole library, forget about it. Interestingly, this is true on the windows desktop controller and not just on iOS devices.

I keep hoping Sonos will get around to fixing this -- because I’m an idiot, that’s why. I got my first Sonos in 2005 and the hardware keeps improving while the software has gotten worse every single year. If there was a good alternative, I’d have jumped ship long ago. Sigh.

New Sonos update and finally Sonos works with Plex.  They told me that the problem was with Plex when I called but it was a Sonos update that fixed the problem.  What a way to treat a loyal customer.  Why wasn’t this problem fixed four or five years ago when it first showed up?  When it first showed up you could easily try again and Plex would work.  With every update it became harder to get Plex working until finally it stopped working all together.

I’m having the same problem. All Sonos components are updated to the latest. Removing and readding the Plex service doesn’t help.
