I have a large SONOS system of Ports, Playbars, Amps, Subs etc on my boat which have all worked well until the latest App and F/W debacle.

However this is to report that when I take my boat off-shore and lose Internet access, I get logged out of the system and can not control it from the phone App. I have had installed on board for 5 years a File Server containing all of my purchased music for this situation, which has worked well. I also do not appear to be able to access my Playlists associated with the music on my File Server without access to the Internet.

It appears that the current developers have not imagined having full use the system (even with a locally attached Music Library) without access to the Internet in order to stay logged into the Sonos system.

Although I have previously logged in whilst I have Internet access, I seem to get automatically logged out after loosing the Internet and if I attempt to log back in I get the following error message:

“A server with the specified hostname could not be found”

Please don’t reply simply suggesting that I install Starlink.

Kind regards…. Adrian

Sonos does not require the Internet to connect to a local server (NAS). All that is required is that your device and server be on the same network which is your local Wi-FI generated by your router. The internet is only required for setup, updates and streaming services.

I don’t use a local server (NAS). However, my internet was now for service. I was able to play music stored on my iPhone to my Move2 (outdoors) via AirPlay over my Wi-Fi network.

Your server (NAS) should show as a Source (I believe) in the Sonos app. Assuming your router has power you might try rebooting your music server to refresh the IP Address on your network.

If their is something different about your setup on your boat please advice. 😊

Hi AjTrek1,

Thank you for your reply.

My point in raising this issue was to help the new App and F/W developers think about all of the issues of me as the Admin and for the users of my Sonos system, not having access to the Internet and how their code should be ready to respond to maintain all functionality other than streaming from Internet.

So far, my issues are that although I had been logged onto my Sonos system, without Internet Access I was seemingly logged out and could not view or manage my system. Why? Please explain why this would be in the specification of the App’s behaviour when not connected to the Internet? I could imagine that a user could not log in without access to the Internet, but why log me out and cause me this problem?

Secondly, although I too could play music from my local Music Library, the associated playlists seem not to be available unless I am back signed into the system and on the Internet. Perhaps this is because the playlists (associated with my local Music Library) are held back in the Sonos Cloud somewhere? If this is the case, then perhaps the specification could be changed to keep the playlists local? By this I do not include the actual tracks themselves, but just the pointers to my local Music Library. Perhaps the playlists need to be able to be actually stored on the local Music Library, requiring Write Access?
