Amazon Music streaming without consent

A month or so ago, my SONOS system started to stream from Amazon Music despite me not having defined it as a service in SONOS.

Today I got a message stating that Streaming would be done from Amazon Music and that it would result in a monthly fee continously until being canceled by me.

How is this possible? I have not signed up to Amazon Music nore have Iset it up in SONOS.

It is totally unacceptable that a service like Amazon Music is being forcedly pushed out to customers like this.

My SONOS system is not connected to Amazon and the Amazon Music service is not included in my SONOS account. Despite this, it (SONOS ONE) insists on streaming from Amazon Music and it tells me that I will be charged for the service unless and until I cancel the service (that I never activated in SONOS).

So do you have an Amazon account? If so, you can see the services and devices in use in that account online. If you’re still concerned then contact Amazon customer services and speak to them direct.

I’m not sure, but Sonos doesn’t, to my knowledge, have the ability to add a streaming service to your account. Perhaps someone had access to your WiFi, Amazon account, and Sonos system, and added it without your knowledge? Or perhaps this email is some sort of scam?

If your Sonos system is connected to Amazon, it’s fairly easy to open the controller, and remove the connection. I’d then go to Amazon and make sure that if someone set it up on your Amazon account, it is canceled.

I think the OP might be using Alexa, hard to say for sure.

And yes, the Sonos app can’t just magically add a music service independently, it’s not self-aware.

Was it enabled as part of an Amazon Prime membership?

How does a Sonos One “tell” you anything? So much confusion in this thread.

I did the following. I:

  • Removed/deactivated Alexa from my SONOS ONE
  • Made sure that all relevant streaming service settings were correct in SONOS, in Amazon Prime and in Alexa.
  • Then I set up Alexa in my SONOS ONE again.
  • After this, the SONOS ONE still insisted on playing/streaming from Amazon Music while Alexa offered to set it up permanently. Which I of course said no to.

In my frustration I thought I give it a last try and requested with voice to Alexa to set Spotify as the default streaming service. After that, it worked. That is it streamed from Spotify rather than Amazon Music.

This was maybe a bug, which I do not beleive. I think it rather was/is a nasty way of getting people to use Amazon Music. Many people with less technical knowledge will fall for this. In my case I have Amazon Prime, but I still prefer to use Spotify for streaming music.

I have seen similar behaviours from Google, Microsoft and Amazon latelly. There has been a clear push to force peaople to use each and ones own services. For example every time the last months Windows Edge (Windows 11) has been updated it sets Bing as the default search service rather than Google that I had defined. Very irritating.
