Short version:

Since the latest software drop my Spotify Playlist alarm has stopped working and is replaced by the HATED Sonos Chime.  I have tried deleting and re-creating the alarm, changing the playlist.

When managing alarms via the Android App and Windows App (not the Web App) I get odd results.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Longer version:

I have a 20-player Sonos setup that includes a pair of Sonos Play: 1s in the bedroom.  I have had an alarm set in the morning for years that plays a Spotify playlist that has been saved to Sonos Favourites.

These players have been problematic since the App debacle with typically a 10-20s delay for them to respond when controlled via the Android app (Open App - Select “Bedroom” - Zone displays with a volume of -1 and “No Content” - wait 10-20s - Zone updates with actual volume and actual content).

However up until the last software drop the alarm functioned with no problem.

Now it seems that whatever I do, instead of playing the selected music, the alarm plays the deault Bing Bong which means I wake up every morning sighing and grinding my teeth.

I have just tried to edit the alarm via the Sonos Windows Desktop App and, interestingly, the “Music” box is empty.  When I try and select one of the saved Spotify Playlists I can’t find a route to them so have had to select something similar (Sonos Favourites doesn’t seem to be an option).

System setup:

A mix of pretty much every generation of S2 player

Wi-Fi over a Deco mesh Wi-Fi system

Rock Solid dedicated fibre internet access (1Gbps)

Control (usually) via Android app

I have tried:

Rebooting the players

Rebooting all the network components

Deleting and re-creating the alarm via the Android app

None of these have made any difference.

Latest experiment has been to edit the alarm via the Windows App.

If anyone else is experiencing similar - I’d be grateful if you’d let me know so I know it’s not just me.

If anyone has any constructive suggestions to fixing this I’d be REALLY grateful.

(And - to those at Sonos affected by the latest round of job cuts - my sympathies.  It’s a horrible process, I hope they take care of you).

Hi @IanJShaw

I’m sorry to hear you’re having issues with your alarms not working.

I use Spotify on my system and haven’t had any issues with my alarms, it still plays the playlists I have selected. Is it just the Play:1s that have issues with alarms or does this effect all devices in your system? If you can easily replicate this, then I’d suggest reaching out to our support team to troubleshoot this with them. They have the necessary tools available to look into your system and see what’s going wrong.

Thanks for the reply.

This particular pair of speakers has become increasingly troublesome since the app problems in a number of scenarios.  General responsiveness is the worst in the house with 10-30s not uncommon between selecting them in the app and being able to control them. They’re the only pair I use alarms on (they’re in the bedroom) but playing an alarm is the most important use-case for them.  I’ve tried all sorts to make them work properly (reserved IP addresses, forced connection to the same Wi-Fi AP, frequent re-boots etc) and nothing’s helped.

So, rather then invest more time in de-bugging, I’ve decided to replace them with a pair of Era 100s and see what happens.  Not ideal, as I suspect that the new controller architecture has accidentally, quietly retired these players but I really need an alarm in my bedroom that doesn’t make me wake up griding my teeth and I still want that alarm to be Sonos.

Thanks again for the reply.

Tl;Dr - My tolerance for more debugging has long expired.

Just in case anyone is experiencing similar.

I have just got off the phone with Sonos support and this is a “Known Issue” with no estimated time to fix.

So - if your alarms are behaving badly, playing you annoying chimes rather than the music you hoped for, you’re not alone!  Some comfort, I guess….

My BBC Sounds Alarm has been waking me up every day, no Chime. Is this a Spotify specific Alarm issue? Can you try another music source for a test alarm?

What time(s) are you alarms? I always suggest not setting at o’clock, or half past the hour, set a couple of minutes before of after, eg 06:58 for a seven o’clock alarm. This avoids a surge of requests to the music services at exactly the same time smart speakers that all have exact same time from internet time servers.

@craigski I have two alarms set every morning: a Spotify playlist at 6am and BBC radio 4 at 7am. The Spotify alarm started failing with the last update while the BBC alarm has carried on unaffected.

One odd thing I noticed while debugging was that the Spotify alarm appeared exactly as I'd expect when viewed via the Android app but when viewed via the windows app the "Music" field was blank. The BBC radio alarm appeared the same when viewed via both apps.  Something clearly different about how the two sources are stored or handled. ( I get that this may be a total red herring but I've been reduced to suspecting witchcraft since the recent "troubles").

Issue with Sonos’ alarms rings a bell.

Just had to replace a failed router and core switch.  When resetting the S2 compatible play1s (in the bedroom) for the alarm primarily, an update was performed.  While the play1s work when selecting them with our usual sources (radio stations), the alarm functionality does not with those same sources.

For tomorrow morning’s siren call, I’ve changed the default to the Sonos Chime to see if that works based on this thread.  Even if it does, I will find that less than sub-optimal.

Recall that my test was to switch from Sonos Radio favorites to using the Sonos chime.

Testing the alarms even using the chime setting does not work.  I’ve tried this several times since I posted 3 days ago.

I feel your pain. I use alarms to “schedule” music and “gently” wake myself up in the morning….well, Half of my alarms play the default chime. so its not gentle at all! and its always the same ones. I’ve tried deleting one and recreate it however, i’m unable to do it. on the MAC i get error message, unable to save. please try again later. on IOS I hit save and goes back to regular screen but nothing saves. on android i hit save repeatedly and eventually have to back out of screen because nothing happens .

Support telling me its a known issue and no timeline when it will be fixed.

dang they really botched to rollout of the new app. left out the alarm functionality, and then when adding it back in its all buggy. 😩

Click on Select…

  • Select your Spotify Account
  • Select Recently Played

You should see your saved spotify Playlist in the list. Select it and click Set Alarm Music.

→ Click Ok and done.

Reopen your Alarm settings → Your Spotify Playlist should be written under Music.

I will test the alarm tomorrow morning to see if the alarm setting works via Windows App.

Workaroud works! Happy morning today.

Hi @IanJShaw et al

We are now investigating several unwanted behaviours regarding Alarms, with them either disappearing from the app, not sounding at the set time, or being unable to be snoozed. We have no estimates for when a fix might be put in place, but we will update this thread when we hear of it.

I hope this helps.

FWIW…

  • I created an alarm
  • stoped the app from running in the background
  • deleted the app
  • reinstalled the app
  • signed in with my credentials
  • opened Alarms
  • Alarm is still there

I’ll keep the alarm and monitor for behavior mentioned in this thread and report back.

Device

  • Iphone 15 ProMax iOS 18.5
  • Sonos App 80.20.35

This is looking more like one of those things that Sonos are using that rely on something in the Cloud - like things in the App can now be switched on or off by Sonos - even in the same App version.

Given the connection challenges I often have to ‘the outside world’, I’m not a fan of needing any ‘cloud checks’ before a function works. I have no difficulty with fallback checks and communication, but failure if a system / device can’t reach outside doesn’t work for my situation, if my local network can communicate with itself.

I have no evidence that there’s a ‘precheck’ on alarms, though, just stating a generality, on the offhand chance someone (PM? Coder?) happens to read this, or our moderators choose to pass it on as a potential ‘corner case’, which might help generally with a bunch of things.

Same, I have no ‘evidence' either, but I don't think it's a coincidence that there are quite a few posts about alarms randomly disappearing and failing to go off recently that don't quite coincide with an App update.  And we've had confirmation separately that Sonos have the ability to ‘toggle’ functionality, irrespective of the App version and that there is a reliance on an online connection for certain functionality.  The actual functionality dependent on an Internet connection hasn't been precisely defined though (that I know of….).

Update: 5/21/25

Alarm still working as programmed. The alarm appears in my iOS devices (iPhone and iPad) as well as my Android tablet. Will provide another update in a few more days.

Similar issue and the fix in case it is helpful to anyone.

Over a period of a few days most of my Spotify playlists stopped being able to play as an alarm and instead I. was getting the CHIME and a Spotify lost connection error.  In this situation it seems the way that Sonos caches information about the Spotify playlist can get corrupted. To fix the issue I did the following for any failing playlist:

  1. Remove the Spotify playlist as a Sonos Favorite.
  2. Re-add the Spotify playlist as a Sonos Favorite.
  3. In the Alarm section, unselect and re-select the Sonos Favorite (for that Spotify playlist) for that particular alarm.

Why the integration gets corrupted is unclear to me, but you can tell if it is by doing the following:

  1. Select any Spotify playlist that is listed under Sonos Favorites (i.e. you added it at some time in the past).
  2. If the option to “Remove from Sonos Favorites” is not there or the only option is to “Save to Sonos Favorites” despite it already existing in the Sonos Favorites list it means somehow something is corrupt. Just follow the steps above to clean things up.
