The S1 app (and older) had the option on Android to play music "On the device" and I can browse my local files and play them. it went away of course with the abomination that is the current app. Is this option ever going to added back into app? This is very useful when working on a space at my brother's farm that still only supports S1. However it would be nice to use it in other situations when connected to a system other than my own.

It didn’t go away because of Sonos, although they did make the ultimate change. It was removed due to demands made by Apple (iOS) and Google (Android) to stop using their devices / operating systems as an NAS. Only ‘players’ that exist on the device itself have access to ‘local’ information.

Unless Sonos changes the architecture of their system completely, you won’t be seeing ‘on this device’ returning. However, you can always use Bluetooth or AirPlay 2 to ‘send’ a signal to capable Sonos speakers.

Given you’re using S1, it probably means all of your speakers were created before Sonos included the electronics capable of handling either type of signal, unfortunately.

If this kind of thing is significant to you, you may want to purchase newer speakers.

Might be interesting to use the phone as a NAS, apparently it is possible.

Then use the Sonos Music Library to play from the phone.

Playback from “on this device” was removed from S2 years before the mobile app fiasco.
