Question

Boost or connect Beam to Ethernet

I have repeated problems of Sonos One SL not connecting or updating. Tried support many times. My YouTube research suggests connecting my Beam with a wired connection or purchase a Boost. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Has support suggested any cause for your issue?

I have contacted them 7-10 times over the past year. I am so mixed up on all their fixes which ultimately fail. After a week or ten days, the One’s don’t play music/sound. I get a message to update software, then have to ungoup the system. After a soft reboot of Beam (unplug) I may get a software upgrade. Afterwards the Ones may or may not b found on the app. If they are found, I can’t update the software on the Ones.

Are you using the One’s as surrounds?.  I would probably ditch the Boost as it has now been deprecated and probably isn’t necessary anyway.  I had terrible difficulties with Play:1’s when connected to a Beam and updates would be a terrible experience.  I don’t have a fix, only a suggestion that some of the older kit doesn’t seem to place nice with the newer kit.  I decided that the Play:1 had served their purpose and replaced them with Era:100s.  I downgraded the play:1s to S1 which seems far less demanding  on their limited memory and sold them in EBay!

I am using the Ones as Surrounds. I don’t have a Boost, but was thinking of buying a used on eBay. I am hoping if I connect the Beam using Ethernet, then my connection problems will be resolved.

WiFi is more than capable keeping up as long as you have a decent router and internet connection so it is unlikely that the boost will help, especially as surrounds connect to the beam directly .  As I said I stopped looking for a solution and replaced the surrounds with era100 though I appreciate this may not be a solution for you, or one that you were looking for.

As Andrew-s stated above, don’t buy even a used Boost. I’ve got two at different locations and with the latest app update they now appear useless.

I’ve got two Play:1 as surrounds with a Beam gen 1 plus a Sub and they have worked fine…. and two Era 300 as surrounds with a Beam gen 2 plus a Sub… all worked fine until the new app.

Very disappointed with Sonos right now.

Thanks for everyone’s input. I won’t buy a Boost on eBay thanks to this advice. I will hook up Beam with Ethernet, having to perform much underfloor wiring to my router. I am going to keep my two One’s rather than invest in more Sonos products for now.

Is Era a replacement/upgrade product for Ones?  I don’t have a finely tuned ear. Mostly use Sonos for TV and some Apple Music or SiriusXM.

My system includes a Beam gen 2, 2 Era 300 on stands and a Sub gen 3… Apple TV and Spotify.

Sure, Ones serve as good surrounds, and Era 100 is a nice upgrade to these, but are likely not necessary (google era 100 vs one ). Era 300 is on a whole other sound quality level.

Question…I thought AppleTV would only work with Airplay and HomePod…not Sonos. Different ecosystems.  Am I wrong?  I have Apple Music, but run it through the Sonos app to my Sonos Beam and One(s). I use Roku for streaming (chord cutter 3 years now!) and HDMI ARC to the Beam.

I would love to use Siri and the native Apple Music app to play on Sonos products.

your help YankeeDude is appreciated.

thx Steveno6, if it’s any help. 🤓

To clarify, I play all music (Spotify etc not Apple Music) exclusively via the Sonos app, never mixing in Apple TV, which for me is strictly for video with sound delivered via HDMI ARC/eARC to Sonos Beam.

For others: always HDMI ARC/eARC (link)
