These details are stored in the hardware. If you only have one player and it has been Factory Reset, these details are gone. If you have multiple players these details will be copied to the Factory Reset player when it is then added to the system as a “new” player.
In general, we don’t recommend Factory Reset. While the Factory Reset might temporarily work around an issue, it rarely resolves permanent issues. Have you recently changed WiFi routers?
The app prompts to factory reset when the system cannot be located on the WiFi network are truly awful.
If you hadn’t changed the WiFi network, force closing and reopening the app was likely all that was required.

No changes to the WiFi but due to some electrical work I was doing, I had shut off the breaker to the room where the router is plugged in; so the Sonos (and every WiFi device in my house) lost connection to it for a period of time.
The next day (network long since back up), I had pressed the play button on the Sonos and it flashed orange which, according to the manual, meant there was nothing in the queue for it to play. But when I pulled up the controller app on my phone, it said it couldn’t find the speaker, and cycling power on the Sonos didn’t correct it. So (as Mr. T noted) the app instructed me to reset the speaker.
I’ve only ever owned this one Sonos product so don’t have any experience with settings being passed around between devices.
If you factory reset one of many Sonos devices the reset device will discover the others and recover the information you erased with the reset.
Key to that is ADDING the reset device back to your existing system, not setting up a NEW system.

But am I correct this only works if you have another device on the system from which the reset one can regain the settings? IOW, if you only have one Sonos, then you’re out of luck.

That is what I tried to communicate with the first line of my reply.
With no other Sonos to recover the erased data from - it is gone.

You are correct.
The previous comment you replied too was pointless to your situation.
