Before Buying - Sky Q and other connectivity

Hi everyone,

I am ready to push the button on a home theatre setup involving the Arc Ultra / ERA 100’s and a Sub.

Currently I have an LG Soundbar which has 2 HDMI inputs. I connect my Panasonic UB9000 directly to it for audio as it shows zero lip sync issues from any source.

I have a 65 inch LG G5 TV.

My full connected devices would be:
Sky Q
Apple TV
XBOX Series X
Panasonic UB9000

Now I know that from my UB9000 I would have to then send Audio/Video to the TV HDMI, and the Arc to my eARC HDMI and let the TV do all the work.

My issues before buying are mostly with SKY Q and how well this works.

Ideally I need to know whether with my setup I am likely to get any Lip Sync issues, and also… I don’t really want the sound coming through my rear speakers when watching standard TV.

Any advice would be appreciated.

What is “standard TV”?

Any normal TV channels from the Sky Q system.

By Sky Q do you mean the TV Service or the TV Service plus Broadband?

We have the latter, with a Hub, and never had any problems with Sonos and the TV Service.

Since the the May 24 update we have had some issues that MAY be related to the Sky Q Broadband Service specifically the Mesh. I have no definitive data on this as the issues that I see are intermittent and difficult to track.

If you search here you’ll see that over the years some users have reported issues with the Sky Q Mesh and many of these pre date the May 24 update.

I have the Sky Q TV service. My Broadband is with EE, so completely separate.

Just want to make sure that it won’t cause any issues right now with the Sky Q and lip sync.

I expect that my UB9000 going through the TV before hitting the soundbar should be fine with a G5 TV. My previous TV’s all had sync issues this way, so I’m just being cautious before I buy.

Plug your BD player directly into your LG TV with existing LG soundbar to check for lip-sync issues before changing the configuration with a different Soundbar?

I am sure you will be fine though, no issues here with LG+SkyQ+Sonos, apart from the annoying occasional lip sync from Sky live broadcasts using radio mics (eg Sports events with interviews etc), but understandable if you think about how its being relayed to your TV in a live broadcast environment from a remote location in another country.

The sound in some Sky UHD channels is streamed using Dolby Atmos. Not sure what you mean by ‘standard TV’, do you mean Standard Definition, SD? That would be PCM 2.0.

We just changed our TV and can now plug our sound bar into the TV rather than the Sky Q box. Lip sync has always varied for us from program to program, not sure why, but has never been what I would call bad. It seems marginally better with the new setup.

How many HDMI inputs does your TV have? I count four auxiliary players and most TV’s have four inputs. Where would you connect the Arc Ultra to in this scenario?

With respect to lip sync, it will vary from TV program to program, regardless of the playback equipment. I don’t expect the ARC ULTRA will degrade your current experiences. Based on online comments, EU TV viewers seem to have less lip sync issues than US viewers.

Well spotted. Arc Ultra would connect the HDMI (2) eARC, that leaves 3 HDMI. In this scenario, I would ditch the Apple TV, as the LG has a native WebOS AppleTV+ App, or obtain HDMI switcher?

I have a HDMI switcher for my Apple TV and XBOX and currently it works perfectly. I much prefer the Apple TV to the WebOS app. It just feels smoother.
