App always wants to update, never does

I open the app on Windows desktop. It says:

“We need to get Sonos running on the latest software. Choose Check for Updates to get started.”

I click Check For Updates. It says:

“No update required. Your Sonos system is up to date.”

I click Done.

But then it goes back to “We need to get Sonos running on the latest software.”

I click More Options. I click “Continue using the Sonos App.”

It says “Some of your products aren’t registered to your Sonos account. Let’s register them now so you can use them.”

I click Register Your Products. I have to sign in, I do.

It says “No update required. Your Sonos system is up to date.”

I click Done.

I’m back at “Some of your products aren’t registered...” Now there isn’t any option to continue.

Ok, so it’s stuck in a loop here. I close the app. I open the app again. It takes a minute, but it opens normally.

Mind you, the system was playing music the whole time. This is only affecting the app.

The kicker? This happens every single time I go to open the app. I can skip the extra steps by opening the app, closing the app, and then opening it a second time. But…. this is obviously not correct behavior.

How do I fix this?

Uninstalling the Windows app and then reinstalling it seems to have resolved the issue. I did also delete the folder C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Local\Sonos,_Inc  in case it was the data itself that had been corrupted. (For anyone else with this issue, note that AppData is a hidden folder.)

I did not reboot the Sonos devices or router. Since they were working, and the phone app was working, I figured their connections were probably more likely to be ok.

Turn your router and Sonos speakers off at the wall. Force quit the Sonos app.

Wait 5 mins then turn the router on and let it fully boot up. Turn on your Sonos speakers one at a time, starting closest to the router, ensuring each shows a white light before turning on the next one.

Then open the Sonos app. Hopefully it won’t give you any messages but if it asks you to update, try that again.

It’s also worth checking all apps on phones are up to date, as well as all speakers.

I will occasionally experience some odd behavior from a controller. A remove and reinstall is usually a good fix. Note that a copy of the critical system data is stored in each of the players. Reinstalling a controller is a minor event. This is why we discourage Factory Reset because if you do a Factory Reset of everything, all of the critical data is lost and you’ll be registering music services and building SONOS Playlists again. It’s best to consult with SONOS support or a very experienced Community member before Factory Reset. Very useful diagnostic data is destroyed by Factory Reset.

I’ve a identical issue on windows -worked fine  before -Now get “check for updates” and if I do that it says everything is up to date - reset doesn’t work, deleting and reinstalling doesn’t work - Mobile apps work fine, But for windows i get “We need to get Sonus running on latest software.Choose check for uipdates to get started” -everything is up to date and  can see via help/info - can’t get off this screen regardless of what you choose

I’d suggest that you submit a system diagnostic within 10 minutes of experiencing this problem, and call Sonos Support to discuss it. Don’t post the resulting diagnostic number here, Sonos’ lawyers get sensitive about GDPR, I suspect.

There may be information included in the diagnostic that will help Sonos pinpoint the issue and help you find a solution.

When you speak directly to the Support staff, they have tools at their disposal that will allow them to give you advice specific to your network and Sonos system.

Submitting a diagnostic does essentially nothing, unless you call Sonos Support to discuss it. YouTube may want to read the Diagnostics - How do they work? thread.

Did you try deleting the data when you uninstalled the Windows app?

C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Local\Sonos,_Inc

The folder will get created again when you reinstall and then open the app. So you don’t lose anything.

To see the hidden AppData folder, in Windows 11, in the file explorer window, click View > Show > Hidden Items.

Spoke too soon. It worked for a while but the problem is already back. Same as before.

What did Sonos Support say, when you called in?

They had me reinstall again, and said they are investigating the issue but don’t have an ETA for a solution. Reinstalling the app from the Sonos website is the best temporary fix as the “needs update” message implies that it is the Windows software that needs updating.

Also, the AI chat is really terrible. Not really relevant, but man, it’s so bad.

Interesting, thanks.

I agree with you on Chat bots. I tend to avoid them whenever possible. They seem to be full of improper data, or otherwise useless.

Don’t know anything about Windows, but it seems odd it needs to be updated for Sonos to function their own ‘needs an update’ process, but what do I know.

Good luck!

We are seeing some really amazing stuff out of AI these days but much more utter garbage. Some of it is totally unexpected, like spontaneous (un-prompted) humor. Much of it is due to poor training or poorly crafted restraints on allowable output. The scary stuff is when the knowledge base comes up empty and the code generates an answer that is the electronic equal to a hallucination.

I'm also happily in the "know nothing about Windows" group, and loving it. I miss the good old days when you could format and reinstall it without the current pressures to do unwanted stuff.
