Hello Sonos community! I need some help with something that has stopped working. I have many Sonos products in my house and make use of the integration with Alexa. I have a problem with two Echo Dots that has started in the last couple of weeks.

A have an Echo Dot in each of my kids rooms and have them configured to always play music to a speaker in the same room ("group" in Alexa verbiage). In each case that's a Sonos Amp. For the last 4 or 5 **years** this has worked pretty flawlessly, enabling my kids to talk to their Echo Dot and say "play XYZ", to which Alexa will reply "shuffling songs by XYZ on Amazon Music, PLAYING ON SONOS" and the music starts playing out of their ceiling-mounted speakers via the Sonos Amp in their respective bedrooms.

In recent weeks however, Alexa instead replies with the following: "shuffling songs by XYZ on Amazon Music, playing on Sonos. Sorry ON SONOS is offline" - and the music won't play at all.

I've tried a bunch of things to resolve this: resetting the Echo dots, killing and re-configuring the Dot to speaker linkage, removing and re-adding the Alexa Sonos Skill, removing Alexa from all my Sonos speakers via the Sonos app and re-adding, rebooting wifi.... to no avail.

Alexa on my Sonos speakers works flawlessly. I can speak to a Beam or a One and things work fine. I can also speak to a Beam or a One and ask Alexa to play music in my kids bedrooms! This proves that the Sonos Amps are working fine. It is just the linkage between the Echo Dots and having music play out of the Sonos Amps in the same room that appears to be the issue. If I specify a room when asking the Echo Dot to play music it fails, but the response is slightly different:

Q: "play XYZ in Elliott's Room"

A: "shuffling songs by XYZ on Amazon Music in Elliott's Room. Sorry ON ELLIOTT'S ROOM is offline"

I'm unsure how to proceed or where the problem lies, but any suggestions would be most helpful. Thank you

Hello @ozziepeeps1, welcome to the Sonos Community!

I am sorry to hear you are experiencing an issue with Amazon Alexa commands on your Amazon Echo Dot not going through to your Sonos.

You’ve already done some of the basic troubleshooting steps I would have suggested but please have a look at our Support Article Alexa commands not working on Sonos as it includes a few more that you can try out, such as the below:

If you do not have voice-enabled Sonos speakers

  1. Open the Alexa app on your iOS or Android device.
  2. Select the More menu in the bottom right.
  3. Go to Skills & Games > Your Skills > Sonos > Disable Skill.
  4. Deregister your Sonos speaker from Alexa by following the instructions on Amazon's website: Deregistering a device.
  5. Enable the Sonos skill again by going back to the Skills & Games > Your Skills > Sonos and choosing Enable Skill.
  6. Once complete, try giving Alexa another command.

You can also contact our Support Team, but since Amazon Alexa works fine when used within your Sonos system, you might have more luck with Amazon Support.

I hope this helps.

Hi, I tired the above to no avail. Any other ideas?

What did the support team suggest?

I have not tried Sonos support yet. I’ll try that next and report back here

I figured it out in my own! It appears to be something that had changed/broken with Amazon Kids. My two Echo Dots have Amazon Kids enabled (and always have done). I experimented by disabling Amazon Kids and it immediately fixed the issue. The moment I enable Amazon Kids again the issue returns. I’m going to proceed with disabling Amazon Kids for now to work around the issue.

Might be worth letting Amazon know as well. Nice find!
