I have an Echo Show 8 in my kitchen, set to play music through two Sonos speakers in the same Alexa room/group ("Kitchen"). In the Sonos app, I have a Playbar and Move 2 grouped together as "Kitchen." When I ask Alexa to play music, it starts playing and shows both speakers grouped in the Sonos app and playing music, but audio only comes from the Playbar, not the Move?

Note: Alexa is not enabled on the Move 2, as I rely on the Echo Show for features like displaying video from my Ring cameras, useful when the doorbell rings etc. The Playbar obviously doesn’t inherently support Alexa due to its age.

Hello @iBoyley, welcome back!

After some internal testing, we were able to successfully command Amazon Alexa to play to a Sonos Group of speakers. The difference with what you are saying is that there was no group in the Alexa App in our case.

Have a look at the following Support Article, Group and ungroup rooms.

Group the room of your Sonos Playbar with the room of your Sonos Move 2 in the Sonos App and disband any grouping done in the Alexa App.

Let us know if this helped.

So I changed the Echo Show I have in the kitchen to just play music through my Sonos Move (previously the move AND playbar were selected)

it still only plays music through the playbar and not the move, despite showing that it is playing through both in the app. I have a diagnostic number if that helps.

if I go into the Sonos app and deselect the playbar so that it only shows the move, it shows that music is playing from it, but it isn’t.

If you already haven’t, I would manually double check that the Move 2 and the playbar have same firmware version. If there is a mismatch, one common symptom has been that speakers can’t be grouped or no music may not come out of all if grouped. The automatic firmware updates can sometimes fail.

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked the firmware/build and both speakers are on 16.4.4 build 81.1-58210

Hey @iBoyley, thank you for the response.

If I understood correctly, when you initiate playback, the Sonos App shows that it’s playing in both rooms (Sonos Move 2 and Sonos Playbar) but only actually plays on the Sonos Playbar?

Since you have a diagnostic after the above behavior, I recommend you to reach out to our Support Team and share that number for some live troubleshooting.

They have tools at their disposal to provide you with information and advice specific to your system and what it reports.
