Unable to AirPlay to Era 100/300 in separate VLANs

Hello,

I dont see any reason why the other Topic was closed. Refering to

I will not accept the fact that this is just closed to say “Just put it in same VLAN”.

This is far more like a F*** O*** statement towards your customers.

The previous models, were pretty fine working, untill the ERA has been released.

How hard is it to listen also to your customers who wants to secure their enviroment and put things in different VLANS?

If this is not being fixed in the coming months, our stores in the Netherlands (35+), will not be onboarded with SONOS setups. To be honest, I still want this to get to work, but if this will stay like this, there is no other choice to see other brands. This is not a threat or a warning, just the facts.

Hope that someone from SONOS reads this actually.

Yeah, I can relate to that. But putting IoT devices and smart speakers in a separate VLAN on my home network kind of follows the same logic as configuring an isolated VLAN for guests at home, doesn’t it? 😊

Not if the controller for those devices is on a different VLAN, no.

Go grab a cup of coffee, take a step back and ask yourself what you are actually trying to achieve and why? Is there something very special and precious on your home LAN that is not already secured? Then put that on a separate isolated VLAN away from your other devices.

I can certainly understand the frustration around a piece of functionality suddenly breaking without warning. And the concept of network segmentation and isolation is not new - I don't think it’s unreasonable to ask for notice of breaks to functionality or an architecture that can easily fit into a segmented network. I just doesn’t seem like it’s a priority for sonos or most of their users.

I haven’t tried it myself but I’ve heard good things about WiiM and it seems like this is functionality that may be supported. Although using the WiiM app on a separate VLAN doesn’t seem to work, similar to Sonos.

I would love for this functionality to be restored to my ERA100’s. It was very useful, and annoying when it just stopped working.

Other home devices support network segregation: for example both my dishwasher and my washing machine are on HomeConnect, and I can control them across VLANs with no issue.

I recognise that Sonos doesn’t support VLANs, I can understand why they don’t want their support team dealing with users’ complicated network setups: that should be outside of their scope. But its also important to recognise that we are not asking for them to support people’s networking configuration, we are asking to re-enable the happy-accident that allowed the ERAs to work previously and continues to work in their other products. AirPlay works fine to my other segregated Sonos products (Roam2 or my Arc) but not to my ERA100’s.

I have found a work-around: if I AirPlay to my Roam2 (also in my Sonos VLAN), I can then add my ERA100’s to that group in order to get it to AirPlay content to my ERA100s, which is a bit of a long-winded way around, but it does work.

And for people asking why you would want to segregate your network please consider something like this: you could have a Trusted network for personal devices (phone/Macbook/etc) and NAS for work-stuff/documents/etc, then a Sonos network for your speakers, then a Guest network for visitors. You can allow Trusted and Guest devices to play stuff on your Sonos speakers, but prevent Guest or Sonos devices from seeing your NAS or trusted devices. I realise this sort of setup is complicated and not for everyone, but for a lot of people that seems like a sensible way to configure a network.

Please Sonos get your **** together and fix this. One vlan concept is so not 2025.

When you take your personal devices away from your home network, do you create a separate ‘trusted’ VLAN for them to connect to, or do they connect directly to an untrusted public network?

NOT AT ALL….
with unlimited data, “always on VPN” connected back home….

Another finding, while I was doing some other troubleshooting…

SAME network, but a DIFFERENT SSID… AIRPLAY will not work?!!!

So just let check the facts here… it is the SAME /24 network… same GW… but a DIFFERENT SSID working on the same Network… it still isn't possible to STREAM over AIRPLAY??

So it looks to be more than only a VLAN/NETWORK seperation, there is also a bonding on the SSID which is being used on the client and the SONOS speakers???

As far as I’m aware, both the Sonos, as well as the device sending data to them, are still required to be on the same subnet. The stack that Sonos uses for access requires this.

based on this story, there is some hope?
SONOS ? can anyone check how it is still possible, when using the same netmask for the subnets it starts to work with ARP-proxy etc?

Can we not stick to the original ONE/BEAM technology?
