I currently have a Sonos system consisting of Arc, Gen 3 Bass, and (2) ERA 300 speakers. I am interested in up grading the Arc to a Arc Ultra. The problem I have is the horror stories of individuals that have done this is people had to do factory resets on the other speakers and True Play sound calibration does not work. This is beyond my abilities. I talked to Best Buy and basically told me there are no guaranties this is going to work. What I'm afraid of is to buy the upgrade and end up with a system that does not work, even putting the original back in place. I even want the the ACE headphones added during this process. I have no problem paying someone to do the work, but finding someone that will guaranty it will work is impossible. Any idea of what I can do to guaranty the upgrade and have peace of mind. I live inn Middletown Delaware 19709.
If Best Buy can’t make it work, they should allow a return.
The way to approach this is to first “Remove” the surrounds and SUB from your ARC, then “Add” the ULTRA to your system, followed by adding 300’s and SUB to the ULTRA. I expect that this will be painless.
If you intend to sell or give away the ARC, Factory Reset it. An annoyance will be that the controller might complain about the now ‘missing’ ARC for a few days. I would ignore this, (it will go away on its own), but if it bothers you too much, reset the controller.
Avoid Factory Reset of your other units without further consult.
I can’t guarantee anything but I can tell you that I did exactly the same thing here and it’s working like a champ. I did not sell the old ARC; instead relocated it to the TV in the bedroom which may be a little overkill but is nice to have. I believe I did a factory reset on the older Arc before setting it up as a new system. Not all that difficult.
Upgraded from an Arc to Arc Ultra, used the same Sub Gen 3 and Ones as sub/surrounds. Here’s what I did:
- Removed surrounds from Arc.
- Removed Sub from Arc.
- Renamed Arc From Living Room to Foo (or any other name you wish).
- Disconnected Arc from HDMI and power.
- Connected Arc Ultra to HDMI and Power.
- Added Arc Ultra to system, named it Living Room.
- Added Sub to Arc Ultra.
- Added surrounds to Arc Ultra.
- Ran Trueplay.
Worked like a champ.

Thanks for this. I couldn’t remember precisely how I did it but your rundown looks good.
