Would adding a new Play 5 to a play bar be better than adding a subwoofer?

Using Sonos play bar with two Play 1s. Instead of investing in a Sonos sub, I was wondering if the bass on a new Play 5 would do the trick.

Whether it would be deep enough or not is missing the point, for TV listening the play:5 would be out of sync with the Playbar, so would sound very annoying. You can't do what you're proposing unfortunately.

If you’re a vocal, classical music listener then I’ll recommend you to add the Play 5. But if you’re a movie enthusiast, then the sub woofer is a must for you!
