I have a 1st generation sonos one.

I am thinking of buying a beam, sonos sub and another sonos one to have 5.0 surround sound.

Will a generation 2 sonos one work with generation 1?

Yes. 

However, the Sonos One will not ‘pair’ with the PLAY:1.
