I have currently x 1 Sonos Play:5 (Gen 1) and three Sonos Play:1s all of which I cant use with the new software and cant paly things like BBC Sounds or Airplay. 

If I was to get a new Sonos IE the portable one can I use the New Software and play say BBC sounds through this and through the other older speakers?

Your Play:1s will work fine with the S2 software, only your Play:5 will be left behind on S1.

That is TV only, not radio. Until relatively recently the BBC would only allow the iPlayer app to be installed on a TV, but not BBC Sounds.
