Is a 4.1 surround set-up possible?
Would it be possible to use four Play 1's and the Sub in a 4.1 surround sound setup (Left-Sub-Right) + (Left Rear - Right Rear)? Or is a Playbar required for the front speaker?

That is not possible. The Playbar is required, and in fact the only Sonos component specifically designed for use with a TV.
